Omg What Has Gone Wrong Please Help+unts look in

    HI ALL

here we go i know quite a bit about building systems i mean i can put one together or so i thought,

i completley took my system aprt today to give it a jolly good clean.

i thought i had put it all back ok and i booted it up and seemed ok

    BUT

i played a song through media player and the poxy fancy creen graphics kept freezing only for a split time thought it might be my gfx card but i ran dawn and no probs

I was just looking through other bits and bobs when i came across this

in my hard drive props and dvd/rom which are connected i am 100 percent sure that this use to say dma mode or even ultra dma mode

but no it says now dma mode if available then underneath it says pio mode as what it is using.

like i said i am a bit lost here dma and pio not sure what this is

my cdrw is a master straight to mobo and that sayd ultra dma mode2 is running

any help guys i have tried to find about this dma mode with no joy yet and am just looking through my mobo manuel

    thanks in advance

    What mobo & OS?

But yes, that will limit your HD transfer quite a bit...

I've hacked the reg to fix this before - but this isn't the way I did it.

Make sure you know what you're doing if you're gonna try this though - nobody can be responsible for nackered registries.

No problem - these things happen, call it a "feature" of XP.

I'd expect the hard drive to be in DMA mode 4 or 5 though, not 2. Perhaps your other device is slowing it down, I don't know, do some google searching on Windows XP registry and DMA - perhaps the "tweak" I gave you sets them to DMA mode 2.

Can't you set it to DMA and then restart

The HDD should be running on mode 4, 5 or 6 (ATA 66, 100 and 133 respectively) if it's a modern ish one and the CDRW should be mode 2. Yes, with newer equipment you can run two different speed drives

An easier way than sodding about with the registry is just to uninstall the IDE channels from your system under Control Panel-->system-->hardware. Reboot once and they're detected and re-installed, reboot again and you're back in DMA mode in theory. This worked for me for a while but it's got to the stage now where there's nothing I can do to force my HD back into DMA mode- thank god my new stuff arrives next week.

Yes, UDMA 2 is the slowest common transfer rate of hard drives, i.e. 33Mbps. UDMA6 is the fastest, i.e. 133Mbps. There's a noticeable difference. Your drive should be either 5 or 6.

To see the speed you'll need to go to the properties of your IDE controller in device manager, not your drive.

i clicked properties in primary ide controller and is showing

    device0

    dma if enabled

current transfer rate ultra dma mode 2

    device 1

current transfer rate ultra dma mode 2

no i prosume device 0 is hrd drive and 1 is dvd rom which are connected

    hard drive master dvdrom slave

could it have anything to do with settings in bios or is there any chance

Right, Basic mode for disks is right - that's just the way Windows NT works - the other mode is Dynamic - they are a total nightmare.

Make sure that "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed" and "SlaveDeviceTimingModeAllowed" in:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002

are set to "ffffffff" (8 f's)

The timing allowed entry won't exist unless the device is a attached - so don't worry if one of two of them are missing, just make sure the ones that are there are at the right value.

Edit: Note that this is the original way that I did it and worked for me - I did some digging and rediscovered it.
