My chipset fan seems to be going on my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and I need a replacement. Trouble is it has be be relatively low-profile (no more than the stock one) due to the video card, otherwise I'd use the spare Zalman ZM-NB32K I have. The Akasa blue LED fan at Scan looks too tall at 20mm. Anyone know a good Northbridge HSF that would fit the bill?
Zalman passive - snap some fins off so the card fits, works a treat and about 4 quid.

Yeah I'll third that, exactly what I done too and it actually gave better temps than the stock chipset fan did!

As advised get one of the Zalman coolers.
I modded one some time ago to replace a noisy and useless cooler on a MSI mobo (because it interfered with the graphics card).
After mod was done and I installed it, I realised I didn't need to mod it as the graphics card had to be installed in the other slot (SLi)
I have the Zalman, just like I said, but it doesn't fit. Not at all. I'd have to snap all the fins off, maybe I could keep one. And my second SLI slot is not useable on its own.
Ah well, found a more expensive passive cooler that looks like it will fit - Thermalright HR-05-SLI.

This one is very pupular among DFI users to replace the original chipset fan.
the Evercool VC-RE is good i had 1 on my dfi mobo, but it didn't fit commando. Neither did the iceberg which i also have, used it on an msi 754 board, it's another good cooler.
Both interfered with caps & were actually especially the evercool to bigger footprint.
Hmm, then probably you should go for Thermalright HR-05-SLI. I heard it's a good cooler although it's bit pricey compared with others. (I thought Clunk had one in his system?) I did some research while ago but these are the only low profile ones I could find in UK. There were some other coolers in Asia... but it seemed they are hard to obtain in this country, you see.

I do have the Hr-05 non sli on the SB, but to be honest, it is no better than the zalman passive mod. I cut the zalman down to fit on an SLI-D and it worked perfectly, even when flanked by a pair of graphics cards, and that was with a load of fins removed.

Nice one notsobig, I've heard that as an idea before but never seen it.
How good a job does it do? I stuck one of them on my old fx5600 back when I had it and it worked well.
It's better than passive cooler my mobo came with so it's ok I guess....but to be honest I expected more. I think springs tension is little too weak, the cooler kind of moves too easily without applying too much power which is not good sign.

If I wasn't waiting for the next gen graphics cards to come out before buying a DX10 one then I could have used it as an excuse to upgrade as the 8800 coolers seem shorter than my 7900GTX one. The fact that the NB is on a slant doesn't help much either. I had the Zalman in place before I got the 7900.
I have more money than free time at present so I'll get the Thermalright. It'll give me the excuse to see how quiet I can make my case - I have a couple of low speed fans I have hanging around that can replace the existing Antecs.
