Worth buying an X2 s939 over an opty?

Thinking of making the switch to dual core - i really dont want to have to buy new ram and mobo so looking to upgrade cpu. My opty sits very happy at 2.7ghz all day, worth going for an x2 4200 over this? It seems to be getting hard to find places that sell higher clocking x2's for 939 now

I would say unless there is something specific you need dual core for or your pc is slow in some way (which i doubt it) then your better off with what you have until you want to change your motherboard and ram

A certain auction site seems to be the only real place to find dual core 939 chips now, but at a premium

i'd have 2 agree with madman045. I had an opty 148 which was the sweetest amd cpu i'd ever had.
I put off upgrading from 1gb to 2gb of ram on my 939 for the same reason, save money for upgrade.

    luck

Cheers! Looks like i'll stick with the opty then and sit it out until its just too slow!

Dual core opterons seem relatively cheap on that same auction site, there doesn't seem to be much of a market for second hand server hardware

Scan have got the x2 4200 (s939) chips on Today Only for £68 if that changes ya mind!

I bought my 4200 in December last year and it clocked to 2.8Ghz right out the box and 3Ghz with a small voltage increase.
I had an Opteron 146 before that, running at 3Ghz. The difference between the 2 isnt noticeable in most things to be honest. Although Im sure the extra core helps in Vista.

Am really quite unsure if my upgrade from an Opteron 146 (running at around 2.5 to 2.6Ghz due to my motherboard not being an overclocking monster) to an X2 4200 (also running at about the same Ghz) was worth it or not.
Already had 2 Gig of RAM and running XP, there are certainly moments when the second core is useful (such as when explorer decides to hog a whole thread to itself until you quit and restart it), and although I bought the X2 for 95 quid I sold the Opty for 40 ish (here on Hexus) so it only cost me 50ish quid.

I dont regret it, but it wasnt any sort of revalation.

I'm currently running an X2 4400 Toledo, 2GB ram on an A8N32-SLI, Vista runs great, the main reason for wanted to upgrade is im also using vmware workstation and for multiple machines, im tempted by an E6600 with 4GB DDR2...

I've checked ebay myself and the 4400 is still fetching around £140...

I have just switched from 4000+@2.9G to 4200+x2@2.2G and to be honest general performance somewhat decreased. But I expected this and it's idling nicely at 30C so I guess there is some good room for overclocking left which I'm about to dig down. For 68quid I think it's a bargain. I'd say get it. I got mine yesterday and paid 10quid more but still feels good you know.

BTW This is the stepping I got from Scan

I bit the bullet too myself on Wednesday and ordered one from scan. @ £68 felt like a crime not too.

My Opty 146 sits at @ 2.75 all day every day, so if i can get 2.5-2.6 outta the x2 ill be happy.

Oh I got the exact same stepping as above.
