OCZ - Gold or Platinum, & other RAM queries
Hi,
OCZ Platinum XTX PC2-6400 2Gb (OCZ2P800R22GK): ~£104 at overclockers*
OCZ Gold XTX PC2-6400 2Gb (OCZ2G800R22GK): ~£90 at specialtech*
Of the above two, the Platinum version is better, isn't it? I realise platinum is better than gold :p, but does this also apply to RAM?
Is there any better (than the above) 2Gb PC2-6400 RAM available for about the £100 mark? Other brands are fine - any suggestions welcome.
I also notice some of the specs mention voltages. Do I need a special m'board that supports this? Will the m'board take care of the voltages automatically or does it have to be adjusted in the BIOS?
With the prices for reasonably good quality PC2-6400 RAM being relatively low, do you think it's a good idea to buy now for a new system build (C2D/AM2) within the next 6-10 months? I think RAM is about the only component that can go up in price!
I'll be grateful for any other comments, suggestions. G
*sorry, being new, I cannot post links
G.Skill RAM being the best overclockers
saltynay, may have a good case you know (but simply stating it's the 'best' OC RAM may be debatable). It's arguably the best in terms of value if one buys it for the price below.
From Newegg (where the same memory is just $165/£83!!):
Quote:
The G.Skill 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 SDRAM is a spectacular offering from a company known for its reliable, overclockable, tweakable memory. Screaming along at 800MHz, it’ll cheerfully be run up well beyond the 1000MHz mark if you’re willing to loosen the timings a bit.
This is high-performance memory for the serious gamer or graphic artist who needs blazing data transfer rates, quick loads, or some way to do it all at once. Equipped with neat, efficient black heatspreaders, these modules exude “performance.” G.Skill markets itself as the “Ultimate Overclocker” and they’re certainly living up to their name with this pair of winners!
Some reviews of this memory (all when it was a lot dearer):
