Do i really need a HTPC?

I have a modded xbox with xboc media-centre installed. This has been the case for some years now, and has served me quite well. However, I'm beginning to feel an interest towards HTPC's. The majority of my media content is hosted on my Linux server and shared via Samba across the network. Now that my linux server is beginning to get full, and I havent found the time to archive things off onto dvd, i have started using my main pc for sharing media accross the network, whether it be packed images of dvds/xvids or mp3s. Would it be feasable to replace the xbox with a HTPC, and would it be beneficial. I am drawn to the idea of building something more fitting with the living room surroundings.

ps: does anyone else here have a similar setup (interms of xbox+xbmc)

Thankyou in advance for your educated advises.

I run XBMC at the moment at it fills my needs, but I havent got HD setup so an upgarde isnt worth it. Have you looked at an XBOX360, seems to be bale to do the medi streaming you want, but if I had the spare cash would probably build a HTPC.

If I was going to build a new htpc then this is the configuration I would use for a really extreme case htpc:

    Cpu: e6320
mobo: abit AW9D-max (great board for overclocking)
    Ram: 2x512mb
    gfx: Ati all in wonder
    hdd: 5x500gb seagate cudas 7200.10 in raid0+1
    optical drive: 1xcd/rw, 1xdvd/rw, 1xhd dvd,
    Psu: 550Watt silent
    fans: 4 front 120mm 4 exhaust 120mm 2 side intake 120mm
hsf: something with allot of cooling fins so fan can be turned off when watching a movie without overheating but can be turned on when performance is required.

that would be an extreme example
