Overpriced and underperforming in my opinion! The 8800 is a fantastic card, and everyone was expecting the 8600 etc. to be pretty nifty too, but they're about equivilient to a last gen lower high end card (example: my x1950 pro).

It will be interesting to see what happens to prices when the r600 comes out.

Hmm...I have an old x800 and the current card is a 6600GT. I would have thought the 8600GTS would be miles better?

Will be better, but not by much, crippled byt the 128bit bus.

did the GTS have 128bit bus? or was that only on the GT model?
However for an in store cost of £160 that massively overpriced for the performance.

For higher price a 8800GTS will cost you around £190
For a lower cost a 7900GS around £100 or a X1950Pro for around £110

128bit on the GTS and the GT.

Get the 8800GTS 320mb for as low as £170 delivered on ebuyer I think, MUCH better performance.

Don't forget - I don't need to play games - HD is the key here. My movies are in 1080i / 1080p, usually .ts and sometimes .mkv.

This all came about with a download of Star Wars ep 1 in 1080i. The old PC couldn't play it smoothly at all, with lots of jumping and poor audio sync. I rebuilt the machine with an E6420 on a new board. The audio and video has improved somewhat, but still not perfection. I can only think it's either the 6600GT or the onboard sound causing me grief now.

Still, the 8800GTS is a lot better bang for the buck as it were.
But if you don't really game you can pick up an 8500GT/8600GT for <£80

Probably a combination of both, onboard sound is rubbish, but more importantly the 6600GT is old, doesn't support H.264 accelerated decoding at all.

Catch 22
8600 GT/GTS new gen both crippled by 128 bus, 256 bus version with 512mb not due till end of June, according to rumour that is, but ideal for what you want.
Cheaper ATI DX9 cards that perform just as well for what you want.

If you have no intention of using Vista and Games then the cheaper current crop of DX9 cards make sense.

If your not playing games then the memory bus speed does not matter at all.

You can go for a 8500/8600. These thing accelerate h.264 very well (much better than any other card in fact). If you need to connect it to your hdtv make sure the card is HDCP enabled (some are not).

The 8600gts is the best card for HD playback atm.
