I just had a thought, would it be possible to use like flash memory instead of your harddrive? like a bank of memory what you use as storage and not a mechanical drive, as electric is faster than something that is mechanical....
Or am I looking to far into the future?????

There is a laptop that uses 32GB of flash memory as its hard drive... can't remember the brand of the laptop though...

Unfortunately, at $30 per gigabyte, the 32GB drive would cost over $900.
ouch... bit expensive for my liking....
though it does say that flash memory prices are falling..so in a few years flash hard drives could have taken over mechanical drives.

In the link above, Scan are doing a 32GB SSD for £307, so thats only $600.
These are going to be dropping in price and increasing in capacity very very quickly for the next couple of years i think.
Regular mechanical/magnetic drives aren't going anywhere soon though, you just cannot touch them for affordable storage space, and really these days they are very reliable, far more so than ever before.
I can see SSDs being installed as boot drives in high end systems along with large HDDs for mass storage. Either that or high ends drives coming with the equivelant of an SSD embeded in the controller board as a seperate volume.
Can you imagine a couple of these drives in RAID-0? Your boot and load times are going to frightening

I reckon pure flash hard drives will never take off - mechanical ones are always going to be offering 100x more capacity! When there are 100GB flash drives, there will be 3-5TB hard drives around so who is gonna want 100GB.
I know I'd rather buy 1TB embedded with 16GB flash, rather than 100GB flash if it cost the same...
I didn't no it was already here, does seem to be costly.
0ms seek time though I was thinking of putting one in my htpc build a 1tb seagate cuda and a flash hdd and a e6600 Lol It is going to be better then my current main comp

I believe that the Eve: Online cluster also makes use of solid state memory to store their main reference tables, RamSan-400.
They definately must deliver a boost in performance because for a whille it did boost performace until the number of customers ballooned
RAM disks are a good bit different than NAND disks, the former have insane performance gains, the latter are nowhere near the same performance, but they do offer good capacity for the price.
hybrid drives are the future anyway I reckon in x years time there will be hybrid drive with 1tb flash 10 tb mechanical lol now that would be awesome
