    SATA 1 or 2

    Chaps,

I'm about to put in a RAID setup to install Vista Ultimate.

    I'm thinking of 2 x 500MB Samsung Spinpoint T running mirrored.

Thing is they're SATA 2. I know I have SATA, but have no idea whether it's 1 or 2. How can I tell?

    Cheers.

    Chaps,

Posted here after looking for answers elsewhere.

Don't bother answering - I've just found the impostant bit:

SATA 2 is backwards compatible to SATA 1, so even if my system isn't 2, I'm OK.

OK - won't bother to say that some drives have a jumper to force the drive into SATA1 mode which some older mobos require before the drives will work properly.

Although SATA II may be quicker, my Windows Experience Score for the drives (2 x Sata 1's) is 5.9 (the highest) so i didnt see the need to change them when i built my new rig.

It doesn't matter, hard drives didn't even push the ATA-6 interface much less SATA, nevermind SATAII.

In future reference, if you want to know what interface your motherboard uses, open your motherboard manual *gasp*horror* yes, and read, if it doesn't explicitly say, take the model of the interface chip, and google.

Whilst I've always built PCs in the past, the latest is an evesham (got an amazing deal through work) and I don't have the manual.

Eww, nasty pre-builts, fear not, motherboard manufacturers usually have a copy of the manual on their websites in pdf, assuming it's not an OEM modified abomination :|

As pre-built goes, Evesham are pretty good.

And I got a death machine for a pocket full of spare change.
