How can i find out what MOBO i have? (& CD tray prob)

As the title says, trying to sort out a new PC but i need 2 install all the drivers for the sound card etc, problem is i dont know what MOBO this PC has, iv looked all over it & cant find any ID tags/names and im wondering if there is a way of doing it once the PC is running?

Second question is, the CD tray isnt reading any CDs, its plugged in & powered, but the computer isnt detecting it, could this be because the MOBO drivers arnt installed. I always thought they were plug & play devices though?

the channel the drive is hooked up to may be disabled in the bios, as for your motherboard i think something like sisoft sandra (free version available) would tell you what it is

cheers, i had a look around the bios and enabled what i could but all iv managed 2 do is for the PC to detect them, but as floppy drives? Im wondering if iv plugged the IDE cable into the floppy drive(i dont have 1) socket? Looking around though, i cant find any other sockets where it could be plugged in?

If you right click on my computer and go to manage and then down to device manager you should see your drive in there with a yellow question mark next to it. Right click on it and select update driver. Then go through the steps to locate the drivers on your computer (point it to the files that you just downloaded). It should find the drivers and install.

SIW - http://www.gtopala.com/ - is what I use. Don't even have to install it, just run the .exe file, tells you just about everything to do with your system. And it's free.

I keep a copy on my thumbdrives for checking clients (letting them know first) pcs.

CPU-Z has a reasonable amount of info too - it will at least give you the chipset information to help you get the correct drivers.
That also doesnt require any installing, just downloading the zip file and run CPU-Z (ignoring the other 3 files that come in the zipped folder).

Given that belarc a go and it worked very well, however it still brought up both my CD drives as 'floppy drives', updateing the drivers for them didnt help.


Looking through the bios i cant find any mention of IDE being disabled. When connecting my PC to a LAN i had problems because the ethernet had been disabled(manged 2 find it & enable it) though so im not sure if im just looking under the wrong section/looking for the wrong name.

Have you been able to install chipset drivers?
In the BIOS does everything look ok (ie 2 optical drives detected, set to 32bit bus-mastering etc)
In windows do they show as the correctly named drives in device manager? If so, are they DMA enabled?
