very interesting thread. i was about to ask a very similar question.

i am about to get myself some sound dampening mats for my case (chieftec midi tower, in case anyone wonders).

my system currently has relatively nice specs and no additional case fan, but i reckon that with the extra mats i will definitely need one.

is the general view then that for this kind of exercise a yate loon 120mm fan would be good (or maybe 80mm, i have to measure my case first)? or better a nocturna one? price really isn't the issue here. it should just keep the entire system stable but be as quiet as humanly possible...

also, i am relatively new to the idea of modding my pc and read further up in the thread something about a fan controller to regulate the rpms. what exactly is this?

The 120mm fans (if they fit) would be better as they tend to quieter.

Some fan controllers (e.g. Sunbeam) will allow you to adjust voltage via knobs - you can't monitor RPMs unless you have a splitter fan cable (to connect to mobo). Sunbeam has 0v - 12v adjustment

Other fan controllers (e.g. Coolermaster Aerogate II) will display rpm on an LCD and you can adjust the speed based on rpms. This controller has 7v - 12v adjustment.

Edit: matting should be the last resort - once you've quietened down other things such as fans and hard drives.

I can't hear the 80mm 2000s at their stock speed over my already quiet Seasonic PSU, nevermind the 1000s. For the 120mm apparently the 2000 is a little louder, but my 1000 pushes more than enough air for me, and is equally silent to the 80mm 2000s (and 1000s I had before).

I have both Sharkoon 120mm 1000 and 2000 fans, the 2000 are a lot louder.... but move a LOT more air.....

My girlfriend has some 2000 80mm and I can definately hear them so I dunno. The noise dampening attatchments were a bit rubbish though so we used the self tapping screws.

But they do move a LOT of air indeed. I was trying to find a way to get the motherboard to control them but seems I'll have to get a fan controller. (NF-M2 motherboard doesn't control fan seed on the aux connection, and speedfan isn't compatible with the board either)

There are other fan controllers that are automatic, working to pre determined fan profiles& a single control(eg cpu temp) or other software/sensors.
T-Balancer - bigNG (also available at scan) I got 1 with my wc build it's excellent. Also can give hours of fun optimising your cooling/noise profille. controls fans either by pwm or analogue.

A bit hit and miss as some of the Papst fans are very good whereas others suffer from bearing noise IIRC.

depends what u want, most people don't use the fan controller that much , u twiddle the knobs find the right settings 4 u & then it's left at that

So the fan controller becomes pretty static, doesn't react to system load etc.,

The T-Balance is more expensive as it's far more sophisticated, a bit like mbm &/or speedfan on steroids, with hardware to match.
Like most controllers you have 4 fan channels, each channel can control a group of fans & react to a single or matrix of variable sensors. The sensors can be digital or analogue sensors from t-balance, or combined with signals via usb from software such as mbm

    Fan Channel & Response Curves

    OnBoard Sensor Matrix

    Software Sensors

So i leave t-balance to turn my knobs for me.

My abit QuadGT does allow individual speed control of of each fan plugged into the board headers, whcich is why I swapped out the supplied Antec Tricool fans in the P180 as they had molex connectors and a three position switch to set speed, rather than a 3 pin header. I think the Commando may also have this facility - and so possibly a lot of other boards?

Where did you get it from?

Quite a few places have them now Kustompc & MCubed T-Balancer bigNG 4-channel Fan Controller for air and watercooling (Auto calibrates your sys) where i got mine from, have seen it marginally cheaper elswhere but as i can pick it up from scan it works for me.

It's also very flexible in mounting will fit in drive bay, pci slot or

Here it's fixed with velcro fasteners. This is a good position as the heatsink u see ain't for show, when fans are running at lowspeed it gets pretty warm.

Fine tune Fan noise (not used yet

The data from all sensors is recorded in an access/sql database so u can see average max & min temps by sensor. Believe me this equpment is dangerous can turn u into a right trainspotter, but you do it quitely & effectvely

Good God I want one already

Pricey but I can see the benefit of using the PC itself to monitor/control temps..

arguable that the pc itself is controlling it, software wise yes but the bigng is doing the actual decision making, communicating via usb with the pc.

you can just make out the lights flashing on the tbalance it's in ther right side hd bay.
