Heat sink from scan - whats it to be.

What I have gone for so far (not bought yet)
antec P150 (has a 120 mm case fan
gigabyte DS3P
8600GT MSI silent
cheapo DDR2 800


Now Im looking to clock the thing but I want it to be quite quiet. Theres not much choice from scan compared to some other places, so it seems to come down to either the scythe infinity of ninja plus.

With the ninja plus (is the scan one rev B? it doesnt seem so) how far roughly do you think A Core 2 Duo (E4300) could get to. Say if your guessing, if you have read something somewhere or actual experience of running a C2D passive.

The Scyth Infinity has the better mounting system of the Ninja Plus Rev.B and a nice clean airflow, I saw a HSF roundup not so long ago putting the Infinity at the top overall.

Cheapo RAM and overclocking.. Be careful :P

The Ninja with a 120mm fan won't be loud at all. I don't think you could go anywhere from stock, if at all, going passive.

Get decent 667MHz stuff, will take you to 3GHz and will probably overclock further.

Scan have got a 1U AKASA All Copper Skive Fin Passive cooler But I've got no idea what it's like

The Thermalright Ultra 120 is supposed to be quite good, on it's own or with a standard 120mm fan connected to it.

But if your going to be clocking it I think we can pritty much forget passive cooling

the ninja from scan is REV.B at least mine was around 1-2 months ago.

Zalman CNPS9700-NT Quiet good cooler has 4pin pwm plug that conforms to header on mobo. if that's a bit pricy try the Zalman 9500 AT. Had the 9500 b4 going to water not as good as a thermalright ultra 120 but quiet & good for around 3450 on my 6600

I will be experimenting with swapping the supplied fan for an Arctic Cooling AF12025 PWM fan - but the standard fan is quiet at low revs, and an awsome performer at high revs.

I am just bedding it in but I am seeing 20 c lower under load on my QuadGT/TT 120 than I saw on my Cammando/ACF7 Pro.

thermalright ultra 120, beats all of them. even the dual fan scythe infinity.

That depends on the airflow of the case.

Page 3 shows the results, if you dont believe me. everything was kept constant.

I'm not saying you're fibbing, what I mean is case airflow massively effects HSF cooling results. I have no doubts that the Thermalright U120 extreme is a cracking cooler, but it might not perform as well in certain cases. And as you can see in the review you linked to, they make no mention of what case(s) they used in testing. It's too easy to overlook how case airflow design contributes to system cooling.

yep that is true, no mention of a case. tbh i wouldnt get the extreme unless you had the money or needed to use am2, i hear its like £50 when the ultra is only £35 ish, for socket 775/939 its a good one to go for. now if only microdirect had some in stock.

why get expensive DDR2 667 when you can get el cheapo DDR2 800 for £30 a GB.

Im curious as to how much of an OC I could get going with a passive Ninja. With the Antec P150 the heat sink should sit inline with the exhaust fan.

So considering that it would be toasty at 3 GHz.

I cant decide if I should go for a near quiet PC or push the e4300 hard. I think I may risk the ninja as it seems it comes with a fan anyway and see what I can get. Then again I'm not so sure hahaha.

I've got an infinity, and I think its crap, especially considering its size and reputation.

gonna get a normal thermalright soon, ill post some results that i get with temps on my amd x2 4600, it probably runs hotter than c2d's anyway.

Scan has a poor selection really, and I thought I would get it from ebuyer with the google checkout thing. so it would be about £23 instead overall. Microdirect are out of the thermalright ultra.

exactly, i tried phoning but im too late, i emailed them tho. tekheads out of stock too. so annoying when you want it then its gone.

I didn't initially respond, because the thread title does say from Scan, but if you are prepared to buy Thermalright from elsewhere then the HR-01 LGA775 with the S775 screw-down adapter kit will give you some lee-way for overclocking and not add any noise to your case, assuming you already have a rear-mounted 120mm fan.

It has a duct that clips on to the fan and the cooler and so get a focussed passive cooler.

Nice Idea. I just had the same one(!) Before I go shopping, may I ask whether the experiment was a success? I have the LED fan Tuniq Tower version, with a stuupid manual fan dial on a backplate.
Clearly, if the Arctic Cooling AF12025 PWM fan performs at close-to-silent @ 1100rpm say, then the PWM control would be ideal for my DFI LP UT P35-2TR mobo.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your learned experience.

the ninja from scan is the rev B i've bought 2 of them and comes with an S-FLEX 1200 fan (very quiet, inaudiable in antec p182)

It's my favourite cooler, as it works so well with low speed fans to the point in some circumstances you can go passive. Thoroughly recommended.

E6600 @ stock settings 18, 19 degrees in TAT and coretemp :D
