Basically you'll only see a significant performance increase in very high resolution (like native 24" widescreen res), and high quality gaming with the 640Mb model. If you have a 19" monitor it would be better value to go with the 320Mb model.

They both run at the same clock, both have the same number of unified shader units.

Maybe in 5 years when complex GPU physics processing is mainstream 640Mb might help, but obviously the card would be very much obsolete by then.

Hmm. I am using a 32" 720p samsung lcd and a 17" phillips lcd. Wondering if it would help duel screen as well maybe?

Or would it be better to get a 320MB card which runs at a faster clock?

Not really, unless you game across both monitors, it doesn't help with the windows desktop and movie overlays at all.

if you are running a 720p screen and a 1280*1024 screen then a 320mb card would be fine - a higher clocked 320 card will often beat a vanilla 640 at these resolutions

Unless you are going to upgrade your monitor before you upgrade your graphics again, then yes, get the 320mb

    Got this a few weeks ago 320MB XFX 8800GTS XXX, PCI-E (x16), Mem 1800MHz, GPU 580MHz
    It rocks
I'm running it on a 20" wide screen @1680x1050 with no issues.

Am cyurrently overclocked at 630 Core 1000 Mem which i think is gtx performance

It wont be close to stock GTX performance by the limitation of the card, the extra streams etc. of the GTX would beat a GTS even with big OC's

it comes close enough & i've still got an extra £150 in my pocket. that works for me.

Or another way of looking at it i got about 6700 on my x1900XT shelled out £230 to get to 11334.

Throwing another £150 in to get an extra 150~250 points really does seem to be the law of diminishing returns.
