Windows Check Disk messed up my memory stick... :(

Hi all, it's been a long time since I posted on here, I've been living abroad for 6 months, but I've got a problem and I think that some peopole here are probably the most likely o any to be able to help!

Basically I put my memory stick from my camera into my vaio laptop, switched it on and then without thinking about it took the memory card out to put back in my camera. I then saw on the screen that it was running a check disk on it and so put the memory card back in. It then finished and loaded up windows. I immediatetly went to check in Windows Explorer and all the photos that were on my memory stick have disappeared. Looking at the memory stick's properties it still says 700MB used and 1300MB free etc as it was, but I can't find the photos. I've tried running it with SmartUndelete to no success, can anybody suggest any way I might be able to recover these photos? There are some very important shots that I really could do with recovering.

Any help would be much appreciated, please any suggestions you may have however simple.

stupid question, but have you tried running scandisk/chkdsk on the card again?

Thanks for replying - there are no stupid questions!!

I have done the option in properties for "Error Checking" with both boxes ticked to no avail. And tried the command "chkdsk /d /r" but nothing seems to help.

UPDATE: Something slightly interesting - did a scan of the card with AVG and it showed me a directory that I couldn't find before called FOUND.000 with a lot of files within under the names FILExxxx.CHK presumably equivalent to the amount of photos on there, any ideas what I might be able to do with these?

Google fixed that one!!!! Found them all, so just need to rename them to the right extension!!!!

I am soooo relieved, need the photos for my portfolio :P

if you want a quick way to rename them to the right extension just get a command prompt up, go to the directory and type:

rename *.chk *.jpg


assuming that jpg is what they should be :)

Automatic Chkdsks? Didn't think that was even an option for the last several Windows. In XP it's only normally accessible after right-clicking on a drive, selecting properties and then picking through the options and then it only does it after a bootup.

So was this weird chkdsk activity something self-inflicted or a Sony shag-up?

I am sure mine has done automatic chkdsks before especially when the drive was dormatted fat32

That may be it. Haven't used Fat32 for ages.
