Reason I didnt pick the X-Fi is because of the poor vista support, I have one at present and it was very hit and miss getting it to work...

Took three reinstalls of the drivers for it to finally work correctly, for some reason, if I install the ATI 7.4 cats, the soundcard stops working all together.

I picked the ram as it seems to be a good price for 4GB matched ram.

I might drop the spec to a 20" TFT, but a GTS will be more than enough going on the reviews...

Regarding the HDDs, I picked that as thats the configuration he asked for. 1TB storage will get him started, but he has a huge movie/music collections already spanning 600GB

I will see what the alternatives are, but he doesnt want to blow loads on the gfx card as we learnt that lesson from the 9800 days...

I haven't seen any problems with x64 vista and gaming. No driver problems what so ever for me. x64 Vista is better supported than people are making out.

There are problems with vista and games, and even more problems with vista 64. Pop over to the games forum and you can read about the problems with STALKER, for instance.

I just thought STALKER was poor in general. I didn't have any issues otherwise, perhaps I'm just lucky, I don't seem to have problems with 8800 drivers either.

Well of course it's impossible to know what's down to the game, what's down to the OS and what's down to the user. Anyway, any problem is sure to get fixed for the bigger games.
