    Crucial Anniversary RMA

One of my 4 sticks of Crucial Anniversary has died. I didn't think it would be a problem as I've had sticks of Crucial RAM die on me before and i just packed them off to Scotland and they come back all shiny and new in a couple of days.

However, when I called up today, I was told I would receive Ballistix PC5300 Cas3 as a replacement as it was the same stuff. When I queried why it was more expensive at the time I was told it was a marketing thing for their 10th Anniversary and that all the stuff about it being hand-picked wasn't true.

So, (I was slightly miffed at having paid £50 over the price of PC5300 Ballistix for blue heatspreaders) I asked if they would swap the heatspreaders over for me, seeing as that was what actually made it 'special' and I was told no, they couldn't do that. It all sounds a bit poor. If I'd wanted Ballistix PC5300 I'd have saved myself the £50 and bought that instead, but I was told that this was the best of the best of the Micron D9 RAM and now it seems it's not true.

The customer service people are fairly helpful, but they obviously have limits as to what they can do, and it does seem that Crucial haven't kept any spares of this RAM at all for warranty purposes.

I'm very tempted to ask for a refund, but I'm not sure if I'm entitled to one after 5 months.

Part of me is just saying take the Ballistix, cut your losses and put it down to experience and and another part of me is saying, this isn't right - they can't swap a £200 kit for a £150 kit (purchase date prices) and expect to get away with it.

    Any ideas?

    Hmm, interesting one.

I think they are allowed to replace faulty goods with ones of similar or better specification. They are not (in theory) supposed to replace them with lesser goods. It could be argued that the Ballistix are infact, inferior to the 10th Anniversary Ram, and therefore an unfair replacement. You would, however, have difficulty proving this, provided the spec's of the pc5300 were not lower than that or the anniversary ram.

You could always phone them up, ask to speak to a supervisor and voice your distaste at the proposed settlement, see if they are willing to replace with better spec'd ram, but I'm unsure how far you would get with that line of argument.

Either way, if you are unhappy with the service you recieved, vote with your feet next time, try another brand - OCZ, Corsair, Geil etc.

If they stated they were hand picked when you bought them then the sale of goods act means you should be entitled to a full refund.

It seems a real shame they've done something like that, as you say and my experiences of ram troubles, you just pop them in the post and get a new one in a few days.

Maybe see how high up the chain you can get on the phone and ask for a partial refund to cover the difference. If it was a bad company I'd say try and make a big deal about it online about "10th anniversary lies" or something but they seem like a good company otherwise.

Lol, just seen someone else has posted similar thoughts, I'll click quickly before anymore people do!

I think Crucial are extremely good - certainly the best for RMA issues (and RAM does seem to be weaker now than ever in terms of breaking regularly) but this is spectacularly annoying.

The customer service representative basically said that PC5300 Ballistix was the same stuff and I should be happy with that. It really comes down to the heatspreaders in the end by the looks of it.

What really surprises me is that they can't/won't swap my heatspreaders onto new RAM for me and that they have no spare parts.

I have spoken with trading standards and they were pretty unsympathetic up until the point where I pointed out that the Ballistix they are trying to give me was £50 cheaper at the time of purchase. It has to be an equivalent or better product, so even if I have really spent £50 extra on diamond cut heat-spreaders, I should get the same RAM with diamond-cut heat-spreaders back apparently. Or a refund. The refund is interesting as obviously you could buy 4Gb of PC5300 Ballistix at today's prices, so I can't see them being keen to do that.

And it really does look increasingly likely that the whole Anniversary thing was a gigantic rip-off and there was nothing hand-picked about the RAM at all.

Can/do you have to prove this?

The refund is interesting as obviously you could buy 4Gb of PC5300 Ballistix at today's prices, so I can't see them being keen to do that.
I doubt that'll bother them tbh. Moreover, they won't have a choice [with the refund] anyway, will they? I'd definitely take the refund if I could get it. G

If he remembers (or still has the receipt) when he got them, this page - http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.crucial.com/uk - has old crucial webpages ranging from May '99 to May '06 (some years are not complete). This may give proof of prices between the 10th anniversary and the ballistics.

Found on the wayback machine internet archive site - http://www.archive.org/web/web.php.

    Hope this helps.

If they won't transfer the heatspreaders for you, ask them if you can simply remove them and refit when they send you the replacement RAM?

Sadly, that would invalidate the warranty - I've already asked that

Apparently they do have a technical area where such a thing is possible as someone from Customer Service has now called me back and they are looking at whether or not it would be feasible.

It would help enormously except I bought the RAM in January 2007 and the pages stop at May 2006. Very useful site though.

Handily enough I bought some PC5300 Ballistix when the Crucial Anniversaries sold out, so I know exactly what the price differential was from the same source over an 8 day period.

In any case no-one is disputing that the Anniversary RAM sold for a premium over the PC5300 Ballistix, what is very unsettling is that everyone is now claiming the hand-picked bit was all marketing hype and that it's just good-old PC5300 Ballistix under those diamond-cut heat-spreaders.

I'm not entirely sure it's true, although I do think the PC5300 RAM is pretty good stuff. If it is true, they lied about it being hand-picked and if it's not true then they're lying now. Take your pick, they are still making themselves look like liars.

Do you honestly think Crucial would let glorified monkeys physically touch memory chips? Even automated individual chip testing would take a significant amount of time and money. Use your head when making purchases, never listen to buzzwords, rumours, and hype.
