One of my 4 sticks of Crucial Anniversary has died. I didn't think it would be a problem as I've had sticks of Crucial RAM die on me before and i just packed them off to Scotland and they come back all shiny and new in a couple of days.
However, when I called up today, I was told I would receive Ballistix PC5300 Cas3 as a replacement as it was the same stuff. When I queried why it was more expensive at the time I was told it was a marketing thing for their 10th Anniversary and that all the stuff about it being hand-picked wasn't true.
So, (I was slightly miffed at having paid £50 over the price of PC5300 Ballistix for blue heatspreaders) I asked if they would swap the heatspreaders over for me, seeing as that was what actually made it 'special' and I was told no, they couldn't do that. It all sounds a bit poor. If I'd wanted Ballistix PC5300 I'd have saved myself the £50 and bought that instead, but I was told that this was the best of the best of the Micron D9 RAM and now it seems it's not true.
The customer service people are fairly helpful, but they obviously have limits as to what they can do, and it does seem that Crucial haven't kept any spares of this RAM at all for warranty purposes.
I'm very tempted to ask for a refund, but I'm not sure if I'm entitled to one after 5 months.
Part of me is just saying take the Ballistix, cut your losses and put it down to experience and and another part of me is saying, this isn't right - they can't swap a £200 kit for a £150 kit (purchase date prices) and expect to get away with it.
Any ideas?
