Dual Core doesn't mean that you suddenly get twice the performance - ie 2x2ghz (as my laptop is) is not 4ghz.

Rather, you get the opportunity to share the load over two cores, meaning that should 1 app be single threaded, it can use one core in its entirety, while other processes use the other core. So that is why 2 cores will be faster than the same speed single core, even with single threaded apps.

Multithreaded apps are a whole different ballgame, but quite rare afaik.

Well for games on 939 I would say 3GHz single core is probably equivalent to about 2.7GHz dual core due to the fact that one core can be dedicated for the game, whilst the other will take care of background tasks.

Not a clue, with the x1300 in my laptop I stay away from recent titles, especially at the 1680x1050 my laptop's screen runs at (plus the 1280x1024 that the secondary screen runs)

don't dismiss the dual core off so easily. an x2 4200 at stock speeds can beat a single core opteron at 2.8ghz, i noticed the difference when i switched while my cpu was being rma'ed. the dual cores arent that less powerful than the fx 53. on the tomshardware tests the 4200 x2 vs the fx 53 shows its pretty much the same and some tests it beats it.

video encoding, audio encoding, graw uses 2 cores im pretty sure, 2nd one for physics processing, quake 4 has a patch for it too.

They don't, but if you're trying to hold onto S939 I don't suggest getting another single core as you've already got a 2.4GHz chip, it'd be pointless.

Pick up a cheap X2 4200+ and at 1280x1024 your GTS will rip through games.

If you're looking to eek the final few drops out of s939 then I wouldn't bother getting a dual core. Longer term is a different matter of course.

Supreme commander is a prime example of a mutlicore game, it utilises the quad cores very nicely indeed.

If you are buying a new cpu now there is no point at all in getting a sinlge core cpu, there may not be many applications that use multicores now but within a year one core will simply be woefully inadequate, new programmes will be written with dual or quad core in mind.
You could probably pick up a core 2 for the same price as an FX53, would make more sense.

they'll probably be extinct by then, and then they'll all be circulating on ebay again.

    ?!

For less than £340 you could set yourself up with...

    - Intel Core 2 Duo 6320 ~ £107.56

    - Asus P5B Deluxe ~ £109.28

    - 2GB Corsair TwinX DDR2 PC6400 ~ £92.70

    Total ~ £309.54

... and it would overclock WELL beyond the performance of an FX60 - exactly how much are you willing to spend?
