Question about power adapters

Hiya, would you damage something if you plugged in a power adapter to it, which had a lower AMP rating.

For example, if a device requires 9Volts and 2amps, and I used a power adapter which supplied 9Volts and 1amp... could that damage the device? Or would it depend on what the device is?

I don't think it would damage it, it would either just not work at all, or be starved of power so that it wouldn't work properly.

Unlikely to harm the device, likely to burn out or damage the PSU. And that could pose a fire risk.

If the current required by the device varies and it only occasionally peaks to the high current, you may get away with it.

Not recommended though.

You might blow a fuse if trying to draw double the amp's the PSU device is designed to do, in fact, there is a very good chance it will.

Alright, thank you. I dont think I will risk it. I ask by the way, because I have about 20 billion power adapters here. They where used for old routers, old ADSL modems, old games consoles, old mobile phones, old electric shavers, old...etc... I have loads.

And now I have 4 new devices which need specific power requirements. I tried to match them up with the ones I already have, and none of them match exactly :( I learned something new, that all these stupid things have their own unique power requirements basically. I didn't realise that. My electric razor takes x volts and amps, my mobile takes something else, my guitar pedal takes something else, my router takes something else, my external usb hard disk takes something more than all of them, etc...

So I was just hoping to save some money and match them up. The official one for my guitar pedal for example, costs £20.. So if I bought ones for all these things which need a new power adapter, I would spend over a hundred quid, which I wanted to avoid :(

Oh well. Its best to be safe than sorry. And burning my house down is a bit too much of a risk to save 100 squids :)
