Is it possible to have a quiet raptor?

Am currently speccing a major upgrade at the moment.

Thought about getting a raptor(prob 2 36gb raptors in raid).

I know they are very fast but also very noisy and wondered how successfully you can quieten them down with enclosures.

Am also worried about any extra heat these enclosures may cause.

Advice/suggestions welcome.

As am getting an e6600 on a p5b deluxe board and an 8800gts, am obviously looking for speed in my system but don't want my pc sounding like the start of a grand prix.

I want the fastest but quietest pc possible. I know with raptors and the other components, there is a major trade off with noise but how much can be done to minimise it?

The scythe quiet drive works quite well, I didnt have any overheating issues, but i could still hear the bloody thing.

Silverstone 5.25" aren't half bad tbh - think scan sells them

Yeah I have a Scythe Quiet Drive too, it takes away the raw irritating sound of the Raptor and makes it a lot more bearable but as Clunk said, it's still audible.

i'm in the same situation, i think i'm going to opt for 2x SataII in raid 0, as opposed to raptors, i don't think there will be a huge performance gap, there much quieter and a hell of a lot cheaper. You could always try using some of that Akasa Noise reducing foam panels, dont know how good it is.

well the raptor in my system is barely audible most of the time, though when you have a compressor and 7V silvertstones they pretty much mean that most stuff sounds quiet.

The only way to have a quiet raptor is unplug the power lead.

Speed always comes at a price!

Set them to power down after 5 mins inactivity. I did that for my 5 year old hard drives and it's amazing the difference it makes.

turn off system restore too, made a huge difference on my machine - my two raptors are now very quiet! Not sure what was happening to cause the noise but was crazy, had over 180gb of restore files and about 80gb 'used'

if your going for quickest pc possible use ssd disks no noise with lower power consumption and much faster then raptors

Ohhhhh no they aren't!! Actually their seek time is phenomenally fast, but their data xfer rate is no where near as quick. Anandtech did a review/comparison a little while ago, albeit a slightly slower ssd than the samsung, they were certainly comparable - from what i can tell, its a bit like say striped raided disks are faster than jbod - ok, yes, the benchmarks make them look faster, under some circumstances, but in real world use - can't tell much difference tbh between striped and non-striped.
