AMD 5600+ x2 - Whats wrong?

My system needed a bit of a boost, so I upgraded (from forum recomendations too!) from an Athlon 64 3800+ to an Athlon x2 5600+...

Anyway, my system is as follows...

AKASA Paxpower 500W PSU
Asus M2N-E board
4x512MB (2GB) DDR2 PC2-4300 Kingston Value
ATi Radeon X1950 Pro (very slightly OC'ed)
DVDRW
DVDROM
2 x SATA 250GB disks (Western Digital)

I have a fan kicking out at the back of the case, apart from that, std. venting.

So, I install this CPU, and after less than 5 minutes, my PC is HOT (I dont mean sexy either )
CPU Temp is reporting close to 60 DegC
CPU Fan speed is reporting at 6000RPM!!!

Now this is not right, surely? Are AMD's that bad? My 3800+ OC'ed 5% didn't get anywhere near that fan speed, and only ever really max'ed at 55DegC when pushed hard.

What's going on? This PC is now so loud it ought to be a blade server running a Quad CPU ZEON setup. Infact, that would be quieter!!!

Is it the cooler it came with? And is the fan even able to spin up to such speeds? Maybe it's something wrong with the sensors/software. Oh, and what is the TDP of the thing?

I have a 5000+ in a shuttle and it's about 40 degrees at idle, so yours shouldn't be that hot! Is it the stock heatsink you're using? Is it seated correctly?

I should of said after 5 minutes of use, in a game...
I thought I'd put that in the original post, sorry.

Now - IE7 and messenger open - close to idle then, the CPU fan is 3500RPM and CPU temp is reading at 37 DegC. MB temp reading 43 DegC.

If I open Test Drive Unlimited and play away for a few minutes, it shoots upto 6000RPM (VERY NOISEY!) and CPU temp hits 58 DegC.

Even overclocked, on stock cooler too, the 3800+ didn't get that hot, and the fan was always <4500RPM.

This cant be normal, and if it is, why didnt anybody tell me

The cooler is as supplied in retail box, but thats all Ive used for the last 3 AMD chips Ive owned. Seated correctly? Well, it clips in, and there isn't really any room for it to move or sit too high is there???

If I were u I wud go for another Cpu cooler, the standard one u have might not be that bad but its still rubbish compared to almost any aftermarket one. Either that or recheck that ur one is seated correctly as it defo seems thers some contact issue.

Careful that you've seated the CPU cooler entirely correctly. I had issues with the ridge on my CPU slot (socket A).

buy a new cpu fan and some artic silver 5 compound will bring your temps down by around 10-15C how Is the air flow in the actual case as my e6600 hits those sort of temps before I modded in more fans as I only had a 80mm intake and 2x60mm exhaust and they were stock fans which turned at 800rpm lol you could easily stop them with your finger and they wouldn't start spinning again until you knocked the case

Just removed the HSF, and put some new paste on, and re-seated.
It CANT be in wrong, this AM2 board has blocks on either side, and as soon as you clip it in, and push the lever home, it is locked in place, perfectly square. You can move it if you wanted to!

Temp (as i type) at idle = 32 DegC (3220 RPM)
Temp during gameplay (10 mins in) = 49 DegC (5600 RPM)

This is now with the SIDE PANEL OF MY CASE OFF!!!

My mate has a socket 939 4400+ clocked up to 5200 speeds, and his temps are 30 idle and <45 on load. this is STANDARD COOLING ALSO. The major difference is, his CPU fan isnt spinning so fast it hurts your ears!!!

No more ideas anyone?

dude, seriously chill. I have an X2 5000+ and it's running at idle at about 44 degrees. All i think you need to do is buy an aftermarket cooler, like everyone else has said. the top end X2s are hot, and your cooler at the minute just probably isn't up to it.

Stop worrying about it and get a new cooler! It'll be quieter and make everything run that little bit cooler. Besides, if you're running the stock HSF, they're ridiculously loud and I don't think anyone uses them anymore.

Before you spend anything, make sure the CPU voltage (Vcore) is correct. Dropping in a new CPU without clearing CMOS may have done something funky to the voltage setting.
