    Question New system, compatibility check

    Hey guys,

Going to be upgrading in a couple of weeks. I've selected my components, and I'm fairly certain that they are all compatible, I'm just posting here just for a few quick run-downs to make sure I havent missed something glaringly obvious. This is going to be my first Intel based system since my Celeron466 (since then I've had three AMD based systems, but I've decided to go back to Intel this time).

    Asus P5B-E Mobo
    Intel Core2Duo E6700
    2GB Kingston DDR2 RAM (667)
    Seagate 400GB SATA HDD
    Asus 8800GTS 640MB
    Thermaltake ToughPower 750W PSU
    Asus SATA 18x DVD-RW

    Existing SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Music
    Existing LG IDE DVD-ROM
    Existing Asus IDE DVD-RW
    Existing Thermaltake Soprano Case

As you can tell, its an Asus heavy system, but thats because theyve been reliable to me in my past two systems. And just FYI, I'm not planning on overclocking (I've just never been comfortable with it).

    Thanks for reading.

Looks pretty good, I was going to suggest a E6600 but as u dont want to overclock u might aswell stick with the E6700. Any particular reason u going with 667 Ram? If u gonna spend that much u might aswell goto 800, only £90(2GiB) for good stuff these days.

The main reason I was going with 667 RAM was because of the prices. But considering how much RAM prices have dropped in recent weeks, I suppose I should be looking at the 800 again.

    Thanks for the reply =)

    3 optical drives... interesting.
I find that it's CDs sitting in my spare drives that drove me mad... whenever you opened up 'My Computer' you have to wait those extra few seconds EACH AND EVERY TIME (why oh why cant windows remember what it only looked at seconds before! ) as it seeks to read them. 3 drives (if populated) means extra waiting.

To resolve this i looked at the discs that i wanted to be always readily available, and used Alcohol 120% to mount them on a virtual drive. Instant access, no waiting, job done

PSU looks a bit too high - unless you are planning to upgrade to sli or quad core very soon, you are better off with the corsair 520W psu imo

Beyond what others have said, what HS and fan are you planning to use? Also, what about that case and its ability to cool (I know nothing about it and am too lazy to google it). For that chip and video board, you're going to want something w/ several 120mm fans for sure.

From other advice I've received, I'm going to go with a new tower, being either a Thermaltake Armor or Thermaltake Kandalf (both Full towers, rather than my current Mid). Both have decent cooling out of the box, plus I do have a third-party fan for the VGA.

As far as HS go, since I'm not overclocking, I've been told the stock cooler should suffice. Is that correct?

And for the PSU, is there any downfall in having too much power? I know 8800GTS/X's are power hungry, so I thought I'd rather have too much and be safe. My retailer doesnt stock Corsair PSU, but they do have OCZ 700W's for a slightly lower price.

    Thanks again =)

Edit: Oh, and I'm only getting another optical drive because apparenly the P5B's only have one IDE connector, so if I wanted to use a second, I'll need a SATA drive. Unless I am mistaken about something...

Also consider the Antec P182 which is technically a mid tower but is great for cooling (3x120mm come with it and you can add 2 more intakes if you want).

I would recommend against the stock cooler. The Ultra-120 Extreme is very good and under $65 (what's like that like 31 pounds?)

You can't have too much wattage, it'll just cost you more for a bigger one. Somewhere there are good PS calculators.

Well having too much psu power only affects the wallet

Even if it has only 1 IDE connector you can connect 2 devices - 1 master and 1 slave. So you don't need the extra DVDRW really
