Question Recommend A New PSU For Ancient A7A266 + Athlon

    Hi everyone

My PSU has died - I switched my PC on today and a very large green flash shot out the back of the power supply... followed by a nasty smell(!)

It's ancient (Athlon 1.4) with an Asus A7A266 mobo, has a couple of HDs and a GeForce 3. I have had it since WinXP came out and it has always run very hot, so I'm tempted to replace the CPU cooler too (assuming the proc survived the fireworks!)

So, any suggestions for a cheapish PSU and a cooler/paste to fit an antique (non-XP) Athlon?

I know it's not really worth the bother and I should probably bin the whole thing but it still does the job for basic mail/browsing. That said having seen how quick (and cheap) my brother's birthday PC is I'm tempted to get rid

Anyway thanks for reading, given the Google Checkout I'm looking to probably buy from ebuyer unless anyone has any better suggestions?

    Cheers

    Oaf

PS Re my brother's comp I am getting fully loaded temps in the 50s/occasional low 60s at 3GHz on an E4300, sound OK? Unloaded low/mid 30s.

    Cooler ideas?

I guess you're right, just go for a budget one as I suppose anything will work.

How about the cooler? I like the Arctic Freezer for the Core 2 Duos, anything similar for the old Athlons (performance/price)?

    Cheers

    Same thing cheaper?

Is that one the same as this one:

but at almost half the price?

Yep, the Zalman 7000 is a cracking cooler. A 330W Seasonic is nice & quiet, if silence is what your after. Otherwise, pretty much anything will do...

    Very good price there.

With regards PSU - I had a look on ebay yesterday and there were several FSP/Fortron ones as well as a HEC (quality IMO) as I've used them.
