Question Please help me complete this picture.

UPDATE: Scroll to the bottom of the thread for my latest spec.

Ok, I've decided to build a future-proof sexy beast rig, and I've got a few key pieces of hardware in mind:

QX6700
2 x Nvidia GTX 8800
2 x 1G Corsair XMS2 sticks
Enermax Galaxy 1000W PSU
2 x WD Raptor X 150G @ 10k rpm

I was thinking about the Antec 900 case, but i'm not sure everything would fit.

With the two GTX 8800's, I was thinking I might go with water cooling, maybe get a pair of the overclocked BFG cards with the waterblocks preinstalled.

I haven't built a PC in a couple years, and I've never done watercooling.

I think I am totally up for watercooling. I'm very technically proficient, and price is not an issue.

Please help me flesh out this rig?

Well not sure about the case or mobo, but it looks like budget isn't the greatest of concerns, so you may as well go for 4GB of ram... Vista is quite ram hungry, so 4GB will be useful in the very near future

You need 64bit vista to get the most from 4GB, sorry forgot to mention it before. If you run 32bit then I don't think it sees all the RAM.

Oh and if you are feeling a little crazy, the 8800 ultra will outpeform your graphics and they only cost a tad bit over £500 each!

Yeah, I would suggest you get 4gig reguardless of what OS you use.

As for the case, it depends really. I think if you where going to stick with fans, theres a particular case which has about 7 fans in it. I forgot its name though.... I think it was some kind of weapon related name...

Anyway, if you where to go with water cooling, then you'd get away with any case with a decent couple of fan slots. I've got an Akasa Eclipse 62 which is good and is popular around here. It would be a good choice for those 2 graphics cards. They are very long, so you need to make sure you get a long enough case.

Can't think of much else you will need, besides case fans, and any other bits. DVD-RW? Monitor? Thats an epic PC by the way.

You might need special water blocks to cool the graphics in sli as the bottom card might get in the way of the piping for the top card as the slots are quite close together... I might be wrong because I have no experience watercooling, but google tells me that they do make special sli waterblocks...

That Akasa 62 is quite nice! Is Overcool.com a good etailer to buy from?

Can anyone recommend a good water cooling setup to cover both the cpu and the two cards?

I think I want one large radiator to cover both, with probably two separate reservoirs, one for GPUs, one for CPU. I know i'll need to run the coolant in parallel to cool effectively.

Any thoughts on that?

The QX6700 has a stupid premium over the Q6600 (over £200 for 200MHz) so I recommend you get the Q6600 as both will overclock to the same level given the right motherboard and memory.

Raptors are noisy as hell so it'd be worth getting something like this for them.

As for the Eclipse-62, yes it's an awesome case but not for watercooling, you'll want something with more room.

So do you have any suggestions on the case?

I saw someone do a watercooled build with a lian li 2000, but that case is quite massive, and i'll only have 4 or so drives to deal with.

Have a look at the mountain mods U2-UFO cases, they are built for watercooling rigs.

If you watercool the CPU, 2xGTX, NB, SB and mosfets, even a PA120.3 wont be enough unlees you get really high cfm fans.

With the mountain mods cases, you can fit a PA120.3, a PA160 a PA120.2 if you wish. That leaves possibilities open for multiple loops as well, and the ability to have a mega overclock in pretty much silence

2x8800GTXs seems like such a lot of hassle, espec if watercooling. why not just go for a single ULTRA im sure that would be more than enough for a very long time.

I know ur throwing money at it to make last but unless you want a serious project to work through i hardly see the point.

If you do want a project to work through then make sure u take plenty of pics and keep us updated

Clunk: I'll have to give the U2-UFO cases some thought... I had always thought I'd use a full tower case, but now you've got me thinking outside the box... or rather, inside the box!

I'm kind of stuck between swiftech and thermochill for the radiator.

Biscuit: I'm definitely looking for a great summer project. I would go for a single ultra, but I'm looking to make this a fantastic project build, and I don't mind the hassle...

I do like that RC-832 case... Is it roomy inside? It looks like I would have to mod it pretty heavily for external watercooling gear...

I guarantee I'll be taking many pictures. My camera is already itching for the clicking, and I'm already thinking about how to set up my lighting and photo space.

shaithis: Storage is a secondary concern for right now, I will definitely consider a raid 5 later, but for now, I'm just going to set up a pair of 10k rpm drives in striping mode for the OS and games, and a pair of mirrored 500 gig 7.2k rpm drives for extra storage. (I have another box that i'll rebuild for long term storage and archives.)

FYI: When this thread ends, and I've picked and ordered all the hardware, I'm going to start a build journal.

I wud say go for a Mountain Mods case aswell if u want a serious watercooling rig. It can comfortably hold a PA120.3 and PA120.2 if need be. Im doing a similar Wc setup as soon as I get my kids rig out the way. Defo go for the Q6600 aswell, the Q6700 is totally ridiculous for the price and u can easilly reach that with a mild overclock and more if u want.
