With price/performance in mind, which would be the better choice? My only criteria is to play Flight Simulator X in DX10.
Is the 8800 really worth the extra?

Yes.. 8800 320mb
depends on the resolution your going to play at and the level of detail you are going to turn on in most cases
8800 everytime. The 8600 performance is trounced by the 8800. It doesnt really matter whether you get the 320mb or 640mb unless you are playing at more than 1600x1200 resolution.
My screen is 1280x1024, so not gigantic. Performance with the 6600 is acceptable with mid-settings. But it would be cool to see what it would with all settings max'ed.
You can get an 8800GTS 320mb on ebuyer for about £165 including postage. You could play pretty much any game at max settings at 1280x1024.
8800GTS it is then! Something for the weekend! Are they worth OCing as well, or fine as they are?
Fine as they are!
8800GTS v 8600GTS
is like
Man United v Stockport County
from the same place (effectively) but a totally different class.
It's a little beyond my usual price point, as I've only ever spent £100 or so on a card. Do you think the prices are likely to drop much when the new ATI comes out? Is it worth waiting?
The difference in price between the 8600 and the 8800 means that largely it's pointless to get the 8600.
You can get a 8800GTS for less £170 and I don't think you'd regret it
8600 demolishes the 8800 in h.264 decoding, but I suppose that's not what you are looking for
WOW! The 8800 really kicks. Flight Simulator with DX10 is amazing. Turned everything up and runs very smooth.
I couldn't wait, so trundled out and picked one up. Well worth it.
ahhh...what do i know anyway...looks way better all the same. I thought it already was DX10 on Vista?
