Enermax Infiniti 650 - questions regarding "rails"

Hello guys

I recently purchased the Enermax Infiniti 650W PSU and I had some questions concerning “12V rails”

I am a bit of a noob when it comes to Power supplies and so was hoping one of your more clued up hexus’ers could help me 

Basically my question is the following….

1. When 12V Rails are referred to what physically are they on my PSU? Are these leads or is it part of the internal structure that can not be seen?

2. When I fitted my Enermax Infiniti 650W PSU I used the non-modular PCI-e cable (that’s bundled with the mobo leads etc) as it had a sticker on it saying for graphics only – im using it with my 1950pro card and im still having the well known “power off black screen issues from time to time in demanding games. Instead of using the “wired in” PCI-e cable to the card, should I instead use one of the red modular cables I have instead to the red connector? Does this constitute using another rail? (see pic below of my PSU)



3.The spec for my PSU is +12V1 = 28A / +12V2 = 28A / +12V3 = 30A – and my 1950pro card says it requires 30A on a 12V rail. In that case the one lead I am using how do I know its 30A one? Ie +12V3

4. Am I reading too much into this 12v rail area and I have it all wrong? In the end I think my x1950pro card has given up the ghost anyway, despite fitting superior cooling to it etc. Im very close to just bunging it in the wifes pc (as she doesn’t play demanding games etc) If this happens can anyone confirm that this power supply would run a 8800gts card ok? As that is my preferred choice if I give up on my current card.

That PSU is very strong and would power any system comfortably. When the x1950pro says it needs 30A, it means in total for the whole system incl. psu etc. If the card used 30A it would be consuming 360W!!

The 12V rails are a series of transformers converting the 240V input to the 12V output.

I seriously doubt your card is being underpowered, probably on its way out if its having problems.

Had it's day already? It can't be that old though I mean they can't have been out that long.

I now wish i just RMA'ed the card in the first place, as there was lots of people having the same problems, but cant now seeing as i have used custom cooling kit on it. I have learnt my lesson now
