    6600gt + 8800gts

    Hi all

I am currently running a 6600GT which I am upgrading, along with the rest of my rig.

I am going to get a motherboard with at least 2 PCI-E 16 slots, and had intended to run another screen off my 6600GT (I know the 8800GTS has 2 outputs, but I would prefer to do it this way)

I think currently NVidia has a separate driver for the 8800 family. How hard would it be to get these 2 cards to play nice? Has anyone already done it?

As far as I can tell, it's actually the same driver on Vista. Can't say for XP though.

yeah as far as new op systems go its pretty damn good, most of the problems are with drivers for the specific componants

Yep - Vista all the way. WAY better than XP. And runs like a dream on dual core. So far had no issue with any drivers, and most just plug-n-play, including my old HP officejet.

As fascinating as the OS debate is, really I'm looking for someone with experience of mixing past and current-gen NVidia on XP.

I don't want to spend money on a new OS which doesnt run anything any faster currently, I will move up when I need to.

Wise move! If you do any kind of encoding (particularlyt video), stick with XP which can be up to 20% faster than Vista.

Is that something that will be resolved over time?

It seems to me that performance varies on an app-by app basis.

Most games and apps tun a little slower than they did on XP, but not enough to affect your end-user experience. Some games (Oblivion is an example) run a good 20% slower in some setups. The issue is that with a OS that is so new, that could be the fault of a long list of things, It could be that the game needs patching, or the display drivers aren't as mature. Or maybe vista just sucks at the moment for certain code paths.

In addition these wierd bugs people are getting where moving or copying a file on Vista takes literally 10 or more times as long sound annoying and are apparently unfixable once they manifest. Vista's long goodbye

I'm not too sure about encoding programs, I've heard that they generally run badly, but I think that may be a matter of the programmers needing more time with the OS.

I know what u mean actually, COD2 runs almost 50% slower on vista with my machine.

So basically what u are saying is we need to wait for the new vista based apps?

Yeah just give it a while, apps will be patched, newer drivers will come out. The OS and the software community just needs to mature.

XP was appalling before SP1 came out, but now it's very good.

Another Vista bug, this one a little horrifying:
