DVI to VGA

I know you can get DVI to VGA connectors but these seem to plug into the GPU instead of bid way down the cable. What i want to know is would it be possible for me to run a 10M DVI cable from my 8800GT to a DVI to VGA connector which plugs into my TV (currently only has VGA but i want to future proof). Is there something to do with the digital/analogue signals that won't allow this?

Should be do-able, provided the DVI cable also carries the analogue signal.

basically, the cable needs to have Pin 8 along with C1 to C5 connected.

This should work, however i think that the only benefit gained will be the retailers as the tv is still receiving a VGA signal at the end of it all. Cables like VGA and DVI just carry the signal accross the cable. You are still converting to VGA in the link between your GC and your TV.

Even if there was a benefit it would be the most minimal. TV's do not like a PC signal in them anyway, just because they have the ability to do it, doesnt mean they will do it well.

I would highly advise that you use the convertor at the GC end and use a VGA cable.

TV's arent expensive and neither are Graphics cards. If you were really concerened then I would get a card like the 4870 with HDMI and use a HDMI cable from the GC to the TV. This I would consider to be an extreme and I would only do this if my TV was going to be used as a monitor permanently.

A 10m vga or dvi cable is still cheaper than most graphics cards and tv's
That said they are not cheap.

main problem you have is male/female ends.
Male = plug = has pins
Female = socket = has holes

Both you graphics card an tv will have female plugs, which means you need m/m (male to male) leads
however the dvi to vga adaptor that comes with a graphics card is male dvi to female vga.
So what you'd need is pc > male to female 10 dvi cable > dvi to vga adaptor > male to male vga cable > tv
Now that's a mess and even if you "upgraded" your tv to one with dvi then you'd still need and additional male to male dvi cable
pc > m/f 10m dvi > m/m dvi > dvi tv

You "should" be able to get female dvi to male vga adaptors then you need to get a m/m 10m dvi cable
pc > m/m 10m dvi > f dvi / m vga adaptor > tv
Then if you replace the tv with a dvi one the you just end up with a spare adaptor.
