Thats too high, the cooler probably isn't seated properly or there is too much thermal compound stopping the cooler from making full contact. I'd take the cooler off, double check the fitting instructions, make sure there's no obstructions in the way preventing full contact, remove the old thermal compound (white spirit normally works very well) then re-apply thermal compound and re-fit. remember that the thermal compound is there only to fill in the surface imperfections it is less thermally conductive than full on metal to metal contact so you only need a thin film on both surfaces.

I'll guess at one of the clips not being in properly on the heatsink, and badly done thermal goop.

e6600 has 4 push pins not clips.

check they are all firmly pushed down, that the fan is connected to the mobo and is operational.

my e6600 runs around 40 degrees i think.

also did u use the std thermal compound that came on the hs/f

and is there any issues with ur mobo model reporting incorrect temps

If we're being pedantic, the E6600 doesnt have clips or pushpins, its a CPU

You say pushpins, I say clips, doesnt really matter.

lol. I checked and the heatsink was seated fine but i have a feeling i messed up the thermal compound because i have taken it off and ut it back on before. My mate is coming over with some thermal compound and cleaning stuff some so i will see what happens then.

It is def over heating because it has turned itself off twice now from what i assume can only be over heating.

I havent known too much paste to make the cpu overheat that much.

Those clips (pushpins ) can seem as if they are on, bout usually the last one takes an almighty shove to get it in properly and youll hear a loud click. Also check that you started off with the top of the clips all the way anti clockwise and when they are fully pushed in, turn them clockwise as far as theyll go.

Edit: I posted this in another thread..

"Lie the PC down flat so you can apply plenty of pressure.

Grab the cooler and turn each of the clips fully anticlockwise.

Lower the cooler onto the pre pasted cpu.

Make sure the clips are lined up.

Push one of the clips in, go for the most awkward first, dont be shy, push it until you hear a click, then turn the top of the clip clockwise as far as itll go.

Do the same on the opposite corner, if needed, get a medium sized flat bladed screwdriver and use that to press and then turn.

Same again on the next one.

The last one is always very tight, if it isnt, one of the other clips isnt in properly. Press down very firmly, and again, you'll know this last clip is in properly when you hear a snap/click, use the screwdriver to turn the clip clockwise to lock it, keeping downward pressure all the time.

Grab the heatsink, gently pull it to make sure its all clipped in properly.

    Jobs a good un

All sorted now, took the heat sink off (which I am pretty sure was on ok)

Wiped off the thermal compound on there, applied some artic silver 5 to it and put heatsink back on. now getting temps of between 40-50. Those temps scare me abit less!

That sound right to you guys?!

    Thanks for suggestions.

Is that at stock speeds and idle or under load?

Grab Orthos from here, set it going and see what temps you get after about half an hour.
