    Overclocking temps and advice pls

    Hi Guys,

I followed Clunks c2d overclocking for dummies post (very handy btw)

I've gone up to 330x9 (E6600 + PC6400) which i ran orthos on overnight and seemed stable (8 hrs or so)
I was getting idle temps 35-36 and load 58-61(pretty static over 8 hours, didnt rise above 61) which seems fairly hot, but then it does cool down quickly which makes me think the cooling is adaqaute.

Are these temps higher than most? I tried running at 400x9 briefly last night but it wasn't having any of it! Do you think i would need to start playing with vcore voltages to get the processor to handle it? (ram should do it theoretically)

If so, do you think the temps im getting at 330 would translate into overheating using 400 and some more vcore? or is there no way to tell beyond trial and error!

I'm currently at 340x9 and testing again with orthos, seems good so far.

Any advice or suggestions warmly received

YOur PSU may hold you back aswell.

The Hiper are OK for low-mid end systems but i wouldnt want to try good Overclocks with one of them.

They have VERY LITTLE headroom ya know.

I'm not sure whether C2D's run hot but I try not to let my chips run over 50c so if it were me I'd be looking at better cooling especially if you are considering upping the voltages. What Heatsink are you using?

Currently using a Scythe Infinity, should be adaquate i would have thought.

Running 340x9, using orthos for the last 2 hrs or so and stable system, temps at load pretty much the same as 330x9 its about 57-59

Interestingly not broken 60 with 340x9 whereas i did with 330.

It seems that it goes from 35-55 in the first 20 mins, and then doesnt get alot hotter, or fluctuate much from that

    Those temps are fine.

    You can always improve on them (or at least try), by doing the following;

Reapply some decent thermal paste, AS5 or similar.

Check and double check that all the plastic mounting clips/lugs are all fully pushed in and locked in place, and that they stay pushed in when you lock them.

Reduce cable clutter to give you good airflow through the case. Without this airflow, the scythe doesnt get any cool air and your temps will rise, simple as that.

Experiment with the placement of the case fans. Some cases work better with the air flow reversed.

Find an fsb range that you are happy with, get it stable and then manually reduce the voltage by a notch, then test, then repeat. Keep going until it is unstable, then go back up a notch to the last stable voltage.

currently orthosing @ 350, it's stable in terms of use, but temps are approaching 68 :s

Should i can it and revert to 340 or 345 or something?

that is very hot...I wouldn't consider that a reasonable overclock. Perhaps you need to work on your cooling solution if you want to get any higher, although 340*9 is a pretty decent overclock. I would carefully consider if you get anything much out of going any higher.

The generally accepted max load temp among the overclocking community for an overclocked c2d is roughly 60.

In theory you could go well above that and as long as it runs orthos stable (preferably overnight) it should be fine.

Personally I prefer a quiet system (with undervolted fans) to an overclocked to the last drop system, but I would still overclock it fully to reach the 60 degree mark. Anymore and I would need to increase fan speeds, which I find unacceptable.

It is upto you, but overclocking your CPU to the maximum won'tt really affect the useful life of your CPU. Maybe without overclocking it, it would have lasted 10years but now if you overclocked it it might only last 5 years. The question is would you be still using it after 5 years anyway?
