Question Please help. Fan for a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Heatsink.

Hi all. I'm going to conquer my hot CPU problem once and for all this week. I am about to order a "Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Heatsink" which seems to be about the best heatsink you can get for a 775 chip.

So I need to decide once and for all, the best fan to complement it. Main priority is volume, followed closely by cooling power. So it needs to be as quiet as possible, and yet move as much air as possible. I'm currently using an Arctic Cooling 7 Pro which is being controlled by the motherboard so runs at about 1350rpm unless its under load, when it goes up to 2000 odd. So its pretty quiet, and I'm hoping to match that as best as I can.

So I've narrowed it down to these fans, and I need help deciding which one to buy:

1) AcoustiFan DustPROOF Fan 120mm
2) Scythe S-FLEX 120mm Fan (1200 RPM)
3) Scythe S-FLEX 120mm Fan (1600 RPM)
4) YATE-LOON 120mm D12BL Low-Speed
5) YATE-LOON 120mm D12BL MEDIUM-Speed
6) YATE-LOON 120mm D12BL HIGH-Speed
7) Take the fan off my Arctic Cooling 7 Pro, and use that.

I'll be using the motherboard to control its speed, so it will probably only be running at average speed most of the time, but if the CPU gets stressed, it will increase the speed (likely to full speed).

Thanks in advance This is cruicial to me, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you If anyone else has any suggestions, please go ahead! I'm leaning towards number 6 though too.

P.S. Clunk, do you reckon that fan will scale well when its running at lower speed? 40db is quite loud for me, so I'll likely have it running at about 1350 most of the time. Think that will still push a reasonable amount of air?

Yes mate, the loonies work perfectly at 7v and still push a decent amount of air, moreso in the case of the faster model.

@£1.50 each, its daft not to try one of each

Stay away from the S-Flex fans at any rate, for your use. While they are very quiet, the air pressure they manage to create is fairly abysmal.

Edit: for reasonable noise and high air pressure, this is a great fan. Alternatively, this high-speed version at reduced voltage.

Edit #2: bugger, didn't notice it said out of stock.

im getting the 1600rpm scythe and this antec one
http://www.antec.com/us/support_prod...?ProdID=75121#

The scythe is almost double the price of the antec one so im still not sure if i should get it or just 2 x antecs. but it is the one reviewed with the ultra on anandtech.

tbh on a cpu cooler such as a thermalright with relatively dense fins i'd go for something that at max has >100CFM both the 6) & the silverstyone pass this test, both can also throttle back to 30~40% rpm giving the best of both worlds.

well which fan has the best noise the cfm ratio?
the antec one does 79cfm @ 30 dB

which is 2.63 cfm per db, higher cfm per db is better, although the db shouldnt be outrageously high.

Thanks everyone, very kind

I think I am going to try the Yate Loons. They are so cheap (although I'll have to pay international shipping ).

But just to be sure, I think I'm going to buy the high speed one, and the low or medium speed one too.

The high speed one should provide more than enough air flow, and if its pretty quiet when my BIOS makes it run slower, then that will be perfect. If its too loud and yet the temps are ok, I will maybe try the other one. But I'll probably get both to be sure. I could even use one in the summer and one in the winter Infact if they are good enough, I might even buy some more to replace my Sharkoon 1000 case fans. But the important thing for now, is that I get my CPU temps sorted out. Im at 64C under load at the moment, and its not overclocked at all So hopefully with that new cooler and that new fan, I can clean up the CPU really nicely and get it installed and hopefully that will help my temps.

I have Akasa TIM cleaner, and I bought a can of compressed air too. So I'll wipe off all the old paste, and polish it up nice with an old t-shirt, and now I've got this can of air to make sure theres no bits of dust or fluff left on it.

I'll let you know what happens to my temps after I've done this. Although I'll have to wait a while for the cooler and fans. I think I'm going to get the cooler from Kustompcs and its still not in stock yet. Although they said it should be there this week.

Thanks again.

Hmm, they cost about a tenner each when you add in shipping Think I'm still going to get them anyway. Although I did see one person on some web page talking about noisy bearing noise. But he might just have a bad one or something. Will keep researching for a bit anyway before I click buy.
