Which HSF for my E6420 overclocking?

I'm not having much luck with my new C2D E6420 with regards stable and cool (well, less than 60 DegC!) overclocking...

Too many people have blamed the stock Intel cooler, so I suppose I'd better dip into my bank account once again...

    Question is, which cooler?
    I have 3 contenders...

    1. Hexus winner, Thermaltake Big Typ VX (CL-P0310)
    2. the bargain Arctic cooling Freezer 7 Pro
    3. Tuniq Tower 120 (my brother swares by it!)

My main concern is the noise generated from the fans, followed closely by temperatures (efficient cooling). I really dont want hassle fitting it either, a simple to fit cooler would do me proud.

My mind is almost made up on the Thermaltake Big Typ VX, my main concern (as with any cooler that big) is the weight...

Is this thing going to be too heavy for my vertical case? I dont want to lie it on the side for the sake of a heavy cooler. They are all heavier than Intels recommendations anyway I think?
Last is the fitment on my board, is it going to "foul" any resistors or anything? Its huge, I dont want to bodge fit it?

    Thx
    Alan

The thing about the big typhoon is that all the weight is away from the cpu so it creates a large turning moment when the case is mounted vertically so it could bend the motherboard, does it come with a backplate? If not you may have some problems
The arctic cooler is very cheap and extremely good value for money, what about the scythe mine?
The tuniq, although good is too expensive imo as not enough places stock it.

They're all designed to work in vertical cases, so weight shouldn't be a problem unless you move it often.

I'd be tempted by the scythe mine. I've just got a Scythe Ninja and it's really good at keeping temps down even passive..I just don't like the standard intel fitting on it..it fell off with a little knock the first time I put it on.

Scythe's always seem like good comprimises..Good value for good preformance.

I use an Arctic freezer in my system though and for the money it can't be faulted.

The Typhoon does not use a back plate, but it has received a lot of good reviews. Having read up on it myself I'm not aware of anyone complaining about problems with the MB bending. It shouldn't be all that noisy (although that's subjective of course), but in any case it also has built-in speed adjustment for the fan which means you control the noise level yourself.

The Freezer looks like a fab cooler for the price though.

I had the big typhoon......it wasn't any better at cooling them my arctic freezer and the reason I replaced it was the hassle getting the thing on and off each time. I had to remove the motherboard to do it, not very practical.

So the arctic freezer 7 pro looks like the one you'd recommend then?
I dont want to break my motherboard or scrape my knuckles and cause lots of stress, just for the sake of better overclocking temperatures. But as good value as the ACF7 Pro is, the HEXUS review winner is only 15 quid more, and they said installation was as good as easy!

Well, unless the design has been changed recently, you needed to screw in some retaining brackets with the gigantic heatsink in place. Needed a spanner that was part of the kit as well.

got a link to the hexus review?

I've just got an ACF7 pro, so i'll try on my 6420 and let you know.

Also got another for my 4300, so I'll post some results on that.

That's the link to the review.

The reviewers were dead chuffed with the Scythe Minie. It's smaller than some of the others, which I guess means more fan and less passive cooling. On the other hand much less stress on the motherboard, as it's much lighter. Most of the large coolers are waaaay over the recommended weight limit.

Forget about the Tuniq Tower, at least at the moment. It does not seem to be available anywhere in the UK currently.

Kungpo, yes please mate, if you could try the ACF7 before I buy it

The Scythe Mine I never even noticed... Thats yet another contender now then! Oh joy!

Fitment of the Thermalright Big Typhoon - any one own this? was it as easy as the group test suggests? And is the weight of this thing going to be an issue? My case is upright, and I move it when (if) I go to LAN parties but otherwise it stays put.

    Decisions decisions...

Well, it looks like they have changed the big typhoon, mine most certainly did not attach using the push-pins....

Although I would still be weary of installing it with the motherboard fitted, something they don't do in that review.....and something that still looks difficult considering how much the top of the cooler overhangs the base.

id also swear by the TT, it takes a while to fit but fits on most mobos and gives excellent cooling - hexus say 25 minutes but its taken me from about 10to anything upto a couple of hours to get it right (changed the NB/SB etc that time)

You guys need to look at Anandtech. Their tests on C2D suggest that the TT is not so special.

I understand why Hexus chose an older (hotter) slab of silicon, but I disagree with their decision. To my mind the test-bed should approximate what is high-end today.

Scythe Mine or arctic freezer 7 pro?
The Scythe is good but the fan is real slow (quiet) so is it going to do the trick?
Do you know what the stock cooler is like on the E6420? Becuase it looks the dogs to be honest compared to other OE HSF's!
I dont wanna spend money for the sake of it, If its only going to cool a degree or two better than stock, why bother?
