RAM BIOS detection advice

Hello all,

I've got 2GB of Geil PC6400/800MHz and stuck it in my P5B mobo. Whilst showing up and functioning as if 2GB was present, when i boot, the bios shows 2GB PC4300 which i assume to be incorrect.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Have i somehow manually forced my ram to run slower! Anyone seen anything similar that might point me in the right direction?

No, that's perfectly normal default speed for RAM to match a 1066 FSB speed.

IF you want to run your RAM at or near it's rated specification you need to overclock your FSB.

And, the P5B will quite often report the wrong ram speed at post, dont worry about it.

Cheers for the info guys, I think it's running fine, cpu-z detects it at the right fsb anyway

One further thing i wonder about is what anyone would suggest as ram timings, the spd for the sticks is 4-4-4-12 for 266 fsb or 5-5-5-18 for 400 fsb.

Since im running somewhere in the middle, would it be better to try the lower 4 timings and hope that the ram would just cope cos its 6400? or should i stick to the 5's?

Alternatively is the best idea to test stability with both and make my own mind up?

Ideally, lower to 4 and verify with memtest86. If it's not stable then up to 5.
