RAM Channel Question

Hello again all,

Quick yes or no question here. I've got a P5B Deluxe and 2GB Geil ram, but was wondering what the best configuration should be.

Traditionally I would put the sticks in slot 1 & 2, but slot 1 & 3 are yellow, and 2 & 4 black.

Would i do better to have the ram in slot 1 & 3 and pair up the yellow slots. Apologise for my ignorance, but what do the colours represent? Is it related to dual channel? if so, what are the benefits?
Running PCmark06 I see that the top system has slot 1 & 3 used, is this the normal config?

Yup, you should place the ram into the corresponding coloured slots (i.e. slots 1 & 3 - yellow) to enable dual channel capability.

Why? THIS might help.

yep if you only have two sticks stick to the coulours, but just fill them all if you have four

Have now changed the sticks over, the fact that 3dmark06 detected the ram as sdram concerned me a little, knew i'd done something wrong!

Will re-run benchmarks etc and see what effect it has

If you find that performance is a bit flakey, try the other set of slots. I think the black ones worked best on mine.

I haven't noticed any flakyness yet, currently experimenting with 350x9, temps after 10 mins orthos, 60-64, is that getting a bit on the high side?

im running 24/7 9x 325 or 9x333 and my emps arent breaking 40 C (1.2V though) or if i use stock (9x 266) I get around 25c load so to me that is hot however he chips could prolly take it

You'll be ok with that, but dont forget, the weather is getting warmer now, so, depending on your room, you could see 10c+ increase in room temps, and a large rise in overall system temps.

Try adjusting the cpu voltage manually, start with 1.275v and see how you go.

I don't seem to be able to get away with any cpu vcore tweaks, just hits a blue screen + memory dumb each time (top marks to the P5B on recovery though!)

If i follow the theory correctly, are we talking increasing voltage for performance? and decreasing it for temp?

okies shall do.. how long do ya want orthosing...

okay here it is - my bad was 27/28C not 25 but point still stands... is stable for longer but i couldnt be bothered to leave it for longer, and it does sometimes run with a bit lower vcore due to droop and therefore a bit cooler
