Must be the scariest thing thats happened to me for weeks. Freshly installing XP, and BANG the CD explodes and bits come flying out.
Okay, now the shock has worn off, Im thinking cash... Can I RMA?
If not, shall I open it up and try and get the fragments out?
Help, my Rig is left in the crap (using an old Athlon 700 atm), as I my old DVD player isnt bootable, so no install for me till its fixed.... aaaargh

What CD drive are you using, i've heard of this before with some drives,
no, the CD literally shattered in my drive, and little bits came whizzing out. Its an Asus 52x burner, and Im lucky I had the Door on my Cheiftec closed, as the only bits that got through are the foily silver side of the CD.
I opend the drive up, and hundreds of little bits fell to earth
Ive heard of this before, and Ive actually seen photos, but having it happen is a fairly big shock.
My digicam is at uni, so sorry, no pics, but what i really need from you guys is to know where I stand with an RMA, cos I dont wanna shell out on a new drive (tho if the process will be lengthy, I'll probably fork out)

That drive is known for it sadly (and others)... It seems to be when the cd hits ~10,000rpm.
Not 100% what you can do about RMA etc though...
Would recommend you contact Asus and I'm sure MS will replace the dead CD without too much fuss (thats of course if its a legitimate copy)

Possibly, but i would tend to contact manufacturer 1st, they usually are a bit nicer
thas probably a good idea, as I cant get through to the Komplett UK site at the moment (tho the .ie and .com still work fine??)
i would goto komplett for the rma. iirc your contract for the drive is with the seller, so they are obliged to fix/replace/refund it. the manuf has the ontract with the distributer (if there is one) which then has the contract with the shop. if you return somehting faulty, they then send it back to manuf. can take longer this way, but a lot of manuf dont have customer service offices, for example abit will only help ppl in hte US, anyone in europe has to goto the retailer....
I'd really go to town with this if I were you. Can you imagine if you had kids and the door wasn't closed? Doesn't bare thinking about.....You deserve more than just a replacement drive mate.
RMA the drive if its under 12 months old simple answer.
Now then, plead ignorance with the ret and say the drive stopped working, dont give them a chance to refuse the RMA due to a crap CDR (for example) being used.
Komplett are very good with RMA's (Ive used them myself on a faulty MB) but I know a few retailers that would use any reason to refuse an RMA

Ahh, yes, exploding CDs. Such fun. From my LG 52x32x52x burner's manual:
Check your burner's manual, if you still have it, see what it says on the subject. Hopefully you're covered. :/The basic default reading speed for CD-R disc media in this drive is 40x. The Read Speed Control will allow you to select the maximum read speed (52x) for CD-R media, simply by pressing the eject button. Note that this function is only available with a CD-R data disc. To enable 52x CD-R read speed, follow the chart below.

The quality of the CD-R data disc varies significantly from brand to brand (or brandless), as well as disc condition used over time. A disc that is poorly balanced or that may have cracks in it greatly increases the chance of disc failure or disc shatter when being read back at speeds higher than 40x, possibly causing damage to the drive. Closely inspect discs you plan to use in the drive for any abnormalities or cracks. If you hear strange noise or sounds from the drive during operation, this could be a sign of an unbalanced or damaged disc and it should be removed immediately. LG Electronics does not warranty drive damage caused by faulty or shattered discs.
This is why I never ever burn at 52x, not even on 56x CD-Rs.
I have a tiny crack in one of my UT2003 CD's - I copied it using a 24x reader - so I don't use the original disk (disk 3 incidentally) any more.
You've gotta be careful with the high speed drives these days - but sometimes these things just happen - CD technology has reached its limit.
