Very Cheap Basic PC Help Please

    Hi

I am looking to help a friend build a very basic PC, the one he has now is giving up the ghost

The PC will simply be used to download music, browse the net, do office stuff and watch films while attached through TV Out on the TV.

We already have a HDD and an AGP graphics card.

I will be needing a processor, memory and motherboard basically. I was thinking of pairing the following and I was wondering what you guys think

AMD AM2 Sempron 3400 Manila Core

    Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA

    1Gb (2X512Mb) Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC4200

    Along with

Akasa Zen Case - Black Silent Cool

    and Samsung SH-S182DB/BEBN 18x DVD±R

Just wondering what you guys think

You might be better off with a second hand system from ebay or something. You would probably get a better spec for less money.

well you would be better upgrading to a new system you have to eventually with a pci-express slot you can re-use your agp card there are adapters out there to convert pci-express into agp and there are some mobos with both agp and pci-express

Specs better that the one i bought from pc world 2 1/2 years ago for £700
Cheak scans today only deals, have seen a few times some very cheap pcie mobo's with pcie port and onboard vga. You always have room to upgrade in the future then without having to buy a gpu at the mo.

You're currently missing a power supply (I wouldn't re-use the old one just in case),

This one should be fine for the system. I wouldn't go any cheaper to ensure you don't end up causing yourself headaches.

Also, you could re-use the case he's got already if you want to save a few quid? Other than that, I would suggest moving to PCI-e motherboard, heck you can pick up a graphics card for sub £50.

My very first, quick example from ebay:
Dell Optiplex, Buy it now, £60 inc delivery.
    Or this compaq for £100
Your specs above are not bad as such, but to be honest it's overpowered for the tasks you want. Plus, if you buy second hand, you're helping the planet by re-cycling
