Overclocking temps dropping over time?!

Hi Guys,

Quick O'clocking question here. I was running my E6600 at 330x9 for a couple of days, and then pushed it to 340, and then 350 (currently 355, we'll see how that held up after work!)

My question really related to whether people have seen load temps drop over time. For example, running at 340x9 for 8 hours with Orthos I was hitting core temps of 62 ish but now I seem able to run at 350x9 for 8 hours with orthos hitting a max temp of 57 degrees?!

Has anyone seen this before? is something (thermal paste) 'settling in' as such?

The PC is quite new (last weekend) and I was wondering if I should expect things to improve further! if this is normal? or if it was just a fluke?

Could well be the thermal paste.

It could also be that your room temp is slightly lower.

The drops aren't always that severe though so as clunk said it might be the room temps.

I think you were posting about temps a few days ago, and a few of us told you that AS5 (if i remember correctly) takes a while to 'break in.' Needing to heat up and cool down several times to correctly align the particles. In practice, this normally leads to a temp drop of 2-5 degrees over approximately a week (depending on use ofc).

Also, the temperature of the ambient air in your case makes a significant difference and that is dependent on varying airflow, the temperature of the air taken in (ie ambient room temp.) or heat generated by other components.

All the same, its not THAT uncommon to see that sort of drop, but it is nice. I would suggest AS5 has had a part to play, but you may be back upto 60 on a warm day, or if you start stressing your GPU for a while.

I think as you've both described, it's most likely a combination of paste and ambient temp.

When I was hitting high temps the room was a lot hotter than the next two times (mid day, hot weather etc)

It's quite hot today, left it running orthos at 355x9 - lets see if its on fire when i get home!

i always say to give arctic silver a week to go off, i think they quote 200 hours ?

Quick update, ran at 355x9 for 9 hours, max temp on the log was 60, which is a little hot, but not disasterous...much!

It was hot today and the flat is like a greenhouse with a bit of sun, I may leave it on 360x9 overnight and see the temps whilst it's cold :]

On the plus side, 4 hours of NWN2 didnt raise the temp more than 41 and at idle its hitting 36 or so. Obviously 100% load is ideal, but how often do you run your pc at 100% for prolonged periods?
