    Alternative S939 Cooler...

Currently gotta AC Freezer 64 Pro over my Opteron 170 and to be honest it's not doing a very good job.

That's when idle. I've re-seated it a good few times but nothing's changed so I was wondering if getting something like a Scythe Infinity would make much of a difference?

    Thanks y'all.

If the AC64 Pro cools as bad as that it may be the base on it isnt flat ?

Id go for a Scythe Mine / Big Typhoon for cooling. Look at the massive heatsink review done a few days ago

That's a point, never considered that it could be the cooler itself...

Hmm, well I'm really after something that Scan stock as I can just nip up the road and collect it so it looks like the Scythe's are a winner.

EDIT: Changed my mind, want the Big Typhoon VX.

    Could be:

    1) [balance of] irflow in case

    2) the thermal paste (which paste are you using?)

I switched from a Thermaltake K8 cooler (had for over a year) to AC Freezer 64 pro and it's cooled the CPU by 3-4 oC.

Initially, the temps were equal to what I had previously, but after a week or so the paste must have set in and it's very nice.

I would also be worried that your cores are more than just a couple of degerees apart in terms of temp.
    Prehaps your heatspreader isn't flat?

    I've tried several themal compounds:
    Arctic Silver 5
    Arctic Cooling MX-1
    Akasa Silver... stuff

There was a couple of degrees between them at most.

Airflow in my case should be fine, an Eclipse-62 with Sharkoon 2000's running full whack... although, would something like this sidepanel help?

I'm gonna try and get hold of the BigTyph™ VX anyway and see if it makes a difference ('cause I can still use it in my future C2D rig), but if the core temps are still a good 10ºC apart should I consider taking the heatspreader off?

Dont take the heatspreader off the CPU - voids the warranty.

Try getting a metal ruler and laying it on both the CPU and HS to see if they're flat.

Or you can try the poor mans flatness test if you dont have a metal ruler; http://www.overclockers.com/tips1224/

    take side of case off

point bloody great house fan in there.

run apps and re measure temps.

if they drop considerably, its case cooling. if they dont, its the heatsink

costs no money to check it that way....ans case fans must be balanced to work right

    Ooooo, looky what I found:

    http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4...hz1375vma7.jpg

That was with my Akasa Evo 33 at max.

Also I've just tried taking the sidepanel off and blasting some air in there but temps hardly dropped at all so I'm thinking it might well be the Freezer 64 Pro.

Something not right there, no way should it be at 75c, my x2 4200@1.38 tuniq sits around 48-50, I have ran an xp-120/tuniq and a ac pro all on this set up and at load the ac pro is comparible with both the other coolers. Might be a dodgy sensor, I also notice your chipset vlts are @ alomost 1.7v

Do you get the same reading running just usdm, oh yeah great to see a fellow epox user

Oops, yeah that's right it was at 1.7v in the BIOS from when I was messing around with a low multiplier and high FSB, I've put it back to 1.5v now.

Just stressed it again out of interest:

    http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/6...titled2pn8.gif

Not good at all... I'm gonna pick up a Scythe Infinity tomorrow as I'll be at Scan HQ anyway so I'll see what it can do... I'll check if the CPU heatspreader's level while I'm fitting it too.

If it turns out it's not level is there anything I can do about it?

He's already voided it - just changing from the retail cooler does that with AMD chips.
