    Graphics cards advice please 8800GTS

My m8s Graphics card has died x850T

He wants a new one and I see the 8800GTS seem to be the best of the price/performance ratio.

1.Anyone suggest a good 8800gts, quietness and guarantee would be nice.

2.I think he has a power problem in that his power supply is an Antec, but maybe only 340w. The one with the Sonata.
He might not have enough money for a new one. Will an 8800GTS demand 400w plus to run?

3.If he cant afford a new power supply then any suggestions for a new card?

Maybe a 7950? Any suggestions for a decent graphics card.

I am running a 7800gts on an 340w power supply no problem.

    Thanks for advice.

there are a lot of great g/c to recommend:

    x1950 pro or gt

My preference anyway, as for the power supply, he would need to get a new 1 It also depends on the rails to.

An 8800GTS would need a new psu. The 320mb is the best value and can be had for ~175. It would need a 500W psu tho (or very good 400W psu).

TBH, i would just get an ATI HD 2900XT, personally i wish i had over my 8800GTS because it has 512MB memory.

Thought the power requirements for the 2900XT were a lot more than the 8800GTS?

It does require more power, but if he was going to buy a new power supply anyway, then it would be more worthwhile.

Have they managed to iron out any of the driver issues with the 2900XT....I've just forked out for a 8800GTS,but they've got a 512MB Sapphire HD2900XT, PCI-E(x16), 512Bit GDDR3, CrossFire, 2 x Dual Link DVI/HDTV, VIVO, Retail over at Scan Today only for £245....

Its still cheaper to buy a 640MB 8800GTS though...

So little in it between them though,I guess it comes down to personal preference. Noise, heat, power consumption, drivers could all swing it.

I would go for and 8800gts with a decent 500W power supply like a Corsair HX 520w for about £55

FWIW, the original Antec Sonata came with the 380W TruePower 380S PSU. The Sonata II has a 430W PSU.

The 380S was ATX12V compliant - it should be able to handle a GTS? I don't know for sure as I replaced the 380S in my Sonata case with a 600W Seasonic last year!

If he has the Sonata 2 with the 430 it should handle it.
Combined max output 384 watts and 3 12 volt rails of 16 amps on each which will give enough.
If it is the early one 380S I cannot find any info, so you need to check the side of the PSU to see.

OK, looks like the 380S ain't beefy enough. It has a single 12V rail, 18A max load. So although it can handle 360W max combined across the +5 +12 +3.3V rails, it doesn't meet the minimum suggested requirements for an 8800GTS of 26A+ on the 12V rail.

(Specs and review of 380S here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article61-page1.html )
