best bang for your buck gfx card?

It used to be the 8800 GT, is that still the case?

Is there anything coming out soon that I should know about?

    Thanks

Re: best bang for your buck gfx card?

I still say it's the 8800 GT, what with them hitting below the £130 mark. The 9600 GT is not as fast as the 8800 GT. if you can go a few quid extra may well be worth going for an 8800 GTS (G92 GPU) as thats a good deal quicker than the GT when you push it up to the higher resolutions.

Re: best bang for your buck gfx card?

Summary version: I'd say it's probably a close match between the 9600 GT and the 8800GT from a performance/cost perspective (3850 is probably in the top 3 too).

Long version: Not done much online price checks lately, so I'll use the price posted on the bargain forum that are still valid: cheapest 8800GT posted is £128 inc (Ebuyer and Play). Cheapest 8800 GTS was £165 + postage (OcUK), but the deal is no longer available. Even assuming there is a £170 inc GTS right now (not seen any), you are still paying 25% more for 10-15% difference in performance (so about 2% cost for every % increase). If we assume that you won't be happy with the GT's stock cooler and will need to pay £15 for an Accelero S1, but would be with the GTS stock cooler then you would be GTS becomes a better buy (8% saving for the loss of the 10-15% gain - again, assuming it can be found for £170). If we assume that you will go 3rd party cooling anyway for both card, then it's 23% saving vs 10-15% performance.

It's actually tighter with the 9600. If I assume that £113 inc is the cheapest you can go with the 9600 (it might not be - I only did a quite check on Ebuyer since they've got the cheapest 8800GT), then the 8800GT would need to be about almost 12% faster on average to be better 'bang for buck'. I am not sure if it is: in FEAR for instance, the gap is only 8.5%, but in COH it is almost 20% (@1900x1200) going by the figures from the Firingsquad (I don't have the time to do as many grab as many figures as I did when I compared the GT and GTS), but based on the limited comparison I've done, I think the gap is around 10-15%, making the two almost identical in value.

For the shear power for price, the 3870X2 is damn good (had all the latest cards btw) especially at higher res.

Re: best bang for your buck gfx card?

9600GT and 8800GT are very similar bang for buck, so get which ever your budget affords
Whilst 8800GTS is faster, it tends to cost quite a bit more...

I just ordered the 8800GT with a zalman cooler for £145 from OCUK.
It's a good card with a good cooler, and pretty good price.

Good choice format, it was between the 8800GT and the 9600GT, let us know how it goes...

how long will it be before cards supporting the new directx come out, seems a tad silly to invest in older stuff when there is next gen knocking on the door?

but so far i'm leaning toward the 9600GT

I didnt realize 10.1 was massively different to 10 in that it made 10 cards old hat though

10 cards don't support 10.1, so they are old hat. Not worth worrying about at the moment though.

    Old hat?

Depends on your perspective I guess, but I would prefer to get a 10.1 card.
