A few years ago I bought an OEM version of Windows XP. I have splatted my pc a few times and now just built one from scratch. I thought it would be simple that the old hard disk is just going to be storage but have bought a SATA drive as my main, that I could put my XP on it but keep getting notes about not being able to activate it. Legally surely I can now switch it over as long as I don't run both of them together.
Who do I need to contact or what do I need to do?
Strickly speaking, OEM licenses belong to one machine, supplied by the assembler. I don't know whether this refers to the case or the motherboard, but probably the "original" combination of hardware (ie motherboard, case, hard disk).
However, Microsoft do have a number you can ring when activation fails, where you can get a new activation code. I've done it a few times for OEM Operating Systems, and it's fairly painless.
My old pc was shot so had no choice but to build new system, is there anything I should not say when asking for reactivation?
Just say the code you have doesn't work. You've changed some items, but not the essentials (motherboard and CPU) and it's not accepting your previous code.
I had a laptop which would reinstall from the recovery disks, so had to use an OEM CD I had lying around. Code didn't work so just gave them a ring and they sorted me out with a new code.

Ive been trying to find the case / a solid quote for this from a news site but have never come across one. Also asked Directhex who was saying the same. Im not doubting you guys for a second, but do you have a solid link to provide to people?
