Sound based 'KVM' switch

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone was aware of a sound switching unit which is similar to a KVM switch, but for audio.

The problem I have is my sound card only has one output for speakers/headphones, and as a result i spend half my time on the floor swapping cables.

What I need is some way of having both plugged in at once and just selecting which one i want to use.

Any ideas if such a thing exists? I don't really want a Y-splitter, more something than can manage a straight through connection but to two outputs.

Is this possible? are there any alternatives? or am i looking and trying to find a sound card that will support both at the same time?

Good old maplin! they have everything!!

Certainly looks like what I want, I notice there is a two port version but at a £3 saving, may as well go for a 5 port version.

Ideally I want a nice pretty version, My desk has had a makeover lately and anything on it has to be beautiful :]

Actually looking in more detail at that box, it seems to take speaker inputs from hifi speakers (unterminated wires)

I would need 1 x 3.5mm to go from pc to units master input, and then the unit would need 2x 3.5mm outputs (ideally it would take 2x 3.5mm inputs one for speakers and one for headphones and 4 outputs in the same config)

hmm, well if your feeling a little adventurous you could take some wire strippers to the current speaker cables and turn them into unterminated wires. Though would would struggle to sell the speakers in the future if you upgrade...

How about buying new speakers with a headphone socket installed?

FrontX is your friend.

Very cheap - does it perfectly. Get a headphone adaptor, and you can plug your speakers in at the back of your PC and your headphones at the front (as you need them).

I bought an internal unit and installed it into a free 3 1/2" bay (with a small hole drilled). Works a treat.
