Getting laptop repaired

Hi,
Laptop suffered a fall, and i broke the power jack (on the laptop), the pin in the middle is lose and it won't turn on.

Does any one have any experience with any repairers (either online, or in kent)? Want to get some reccomendations really, most of the top sites for "repair laptops uk" or whatever have crap sites, doesn't really make me want to trust half of em...... looks like they were done in Word just saved as html ;p

I've got a similar problem with my Thinkpad..although I think the power input on the mobo is fried..(battery power works but power from the power supply doesn't).

they tend to have several pins on the socket, one is charging and the other is Ac power + signal in some cases and a few earth's, so it may be the same thing, bad socket.. does any amount of wiggleing the socket get the power light to flash ?

I heard it would be a big job to repair something like bad power on the mobo...no amount of jiggling works for my problem..only the battery works unfortunately..wouldn't mind fixing it one day though.

Happened with my acer, luckily it was still under warrenty albeit with 20days left lol.
They returned it within 5days repaired.
Although they gave me a new AC adapter thing and took my old one.
Was never sure if it was the adapter or laptop charging pin..

some laptops, and nearly all the dell ones have a sensor contact in the plug, for instance, dell laptop bios can tell you the revision of the charger being used, and we were told to get a refurb charger along with a refurb laptop motherboard as the late A0* of the board is not compatable with the original A00 of the charger.

you didnt "have to" as it would still work and charge from older power supplys, but they must have changed something in the PSU's for the greater good. maybe that was why they swapped out both in your case.

If you contact original manufacture about an out of warranty repair or some repair places for this sort of problem, they'll charge you a small fortune to replace the mother board.
If it's just a snapped pin in the power socket then with great care you should be able to remove it and soilder a new one in, but I'd not advise doing it yourself.

Laptop Cases, Screens and Mother Boards have stupid mark up prices on them and you can cost 3times more than the laptop costs if you tried to but the bits to build it your self.

yeh main dealer wants to replace the board, i get the sockets for under a tenner in most cases. the times stripping the damn things down to get the mobo out...

I was told I needed to replace or repair the mobo too...getting a socket is easy enough on ebay for my model..unfortunately I don't think it would be worth the expenditure in replacing the whole mobo!

GonNzO do/can you replace the VGA Dsub sockets on motherboards? we've got a couple of Acer Travelmate 240 that the socket is going on.
eg you need to put a slight upwards pressure on it to actually get output or the colours are off without upwards pressure (wedgeing a pen under the vga plug when it's pluged in works currently)
