Site to Site Networking?

Go on then, hit me with the options...

We've got a new site opening 0.6 miles away. It's pretty direct.

How can we best network the two.

I'm guessing my idea of physically cabling the two (A->B) is still far too extreme? Would the council refuse, or could they be persuaded do you reckon?

At the minute I'm just looking for suggestions to entertain...

Satellite dish to transmit wifi A->B ?



I realise VPN is going to be the most feasable, but for the next 10 minutes anything goes. Hit me with ideas.

we used them in my last job. Not too cheap but very fast.

What's 'not too cheap', sounds ideal tbh :)

its a dedicated fibre link. Its not going to be pocket money.

6 months back we had BT install 21cn in A and the exchange is bang next to B, reckon that might help at all?

Just DON'T get sold on anything involving microwave relays or similar...in my last place, someone (NOT the IT department) got talked into installing a m/wave relay between two sites. Which sort of worked. Unless it was foggy. Or too sunny. Or too cloudy. Or raining... Eventually, we determined that it would work REALLY well, so long as we could channel the microwaves down a foil-lined placcy pipe between the two sites, suspended at a height of about 25 feet for the roughly 1km distance. At which point the relays came down and got stuffed into a little-frequented part of storage and they got out the diggers and blew some fibre across instead...expensive, but very very quick and reliable.

Point to point wireless? with an encripted layer over the top?

Might just be simpler to get a leased line if none of the above suggestions bear fruit.

We run VPN via 3 sites accross the country and looking at switching for 8x 8mbit q-balanced adsl lines into 1x 8mb leased line per site.

Admittedly these are large distances where some of the other suggestions wouldn't work. But unless you can orchistrate some long distance lan option type thing, you'd benefit from all the bits and bobs like the low/zero contention and up/down speed being equal etc

Technology for this sort of thing changes pretty fast, so it doesn't matter what you do now you will find a cheaper & better WiMAX/leased line/whatever setup in a year or two :)

Have experienced Microwave over ~10 miles (prey for good weather) and over a couple of miles (rock solid) so I wouldn't rule that out for under a mile. Heck, at that distance you might get away with WiFi and a couple of directional antennas!
