Gigabyte P35-DS4/DQ6 users - which HSFs actually fit?

    Hi guys,

I'm planning on getting a Gigabyte P35 board (DS4 or DQ6) - the new ones with the huge heatpipe cooling system.

Please can any users post here which high end HSF combo's actually fit on this board (Thermalright, Tuniq, Scythe etc).

    Thanks!

Yes - the nothbridge HS in particular is huge.

I've read the Noctua NH-U12 definitely doesn't fit, and that the Tuniq Tower, Thermalright Ultra 120 and Scythe Ninja all do fit, but with varying degrees of touching the surrounding heatsinks (and that kinda worries me). Not seen anything on the Scythe Infinity.

...but I'd really like to hear first hand from someone who's got one of these boards.

They are clearly aimed at Quad core overclockers, so it seems strange if the current crop of elite air coolers don't fit

Those are some very large heatsinks your looking at, why not go for somthing smaller, this seems a popular one http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...Thumbnails=yes

Don't forget the gigabite p35 boards have a copper cooling plate under the cpu so you won't be able to use anything that requires a back plate to be fitted to the motherboard.
Chech out the you tube vid at bottom of the page
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...404&CatId=1533

The review in tweaktown says it uses a gigabyte neon http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=404 Which is just an old stock pentium heatsink with a bigger fan on top.
I'm looking to build a new pc with a p35 board thinking of using this one http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=500678

Because I'm planning on popping in a Q6600 quad and I'd like to overclock it. I'm not looking for anything massive, say 9x333=3GHz, but these chips are so hot it's really high end air cooling or water, and I really don't want to play around with water cooling. Sure, at default the stock cooler or any half way decent after market cooler will do the job just fine.

You should also consider the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=340995

It comes highly recommended at £12 and is a great alternative to the stock Intel coolers. It might be a tad noisier than the coolermaster though, but will probably run a little cooler as a result as they are both very similar designs.

Thermalright have now updated their motherboard compatibility list for the Ultra 120 and it now includes P35 based boards, including the Gigabyte DS4 and DQ6:

    http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/Ultra-120-MCL.htm

There only seems to be one list though, for both Ultra-120 and Extreme. The heatpipes on the Extreme are spread a little wider (further apart at base), but presumably this doesn't cause any problems over the regular Ultra-120??

So do I go for the Ultra or Extreme... decisions, decisions

Now i'm not familiar with the thermalright coolers but this add says "includes bolt through bracket" you might want to double cheack that the bracket will fit over the copper cooling on the back of the cpu on the gigabyte p35 boards.

The copper cooling backplate on the DQ6 is easily removed. There are instructions in the motherboard manual.

I'm probably going to go for the DS4 model though as it doesn't have that backplate cooler, which I'd have to remove anyway. The only other difference between the two is the quad 3-phase (12 phases) circuitry feeding the CPU whereas the DS4 is only 6 phase (should still be more than enough).

In the link further up it has one of their people talking about the board on a you tube vid, he says that you can't use a cooler that requirs a backplate. Are you sure about it being removable? As those at tiger direct certainly think you can't.

Yes, I'm sure unless the motherboard manual is wrong.

See the manual, Section 1-3-3, Page 16: Removing the Crazy Cool heatsink from the back of the motherboard.

    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...l&FileID=17963

Thermalright also give instructions for removing the backplate cooler or for fitting over the backplate cooler with longer screws on their website. Those guys at Tiger obviously didn't bother to read the manual.

Oh good - you get one then Andy and tell me if it fits

I really just don't know which to get

From what I can see, the following boards are all basically the same...

P35-DS3P - has basic nb and sb coolers
P35-DS4 - has mosfet coolers and heatpipe system
P35-DQ6 - also has Crazy Cool backplate cooling plus 12 phase CPU supply.

I really want to go with the Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme. If it doesn't fit I could just remove the Gigabyte heatpipe coolers and install something like Thermalright NB cooler that's a lot slimmer. But at that point I may as well just go that route from the start and save some money on the cheaper P35-DS3P board as it looks basically the same board anyway.
