overclocking an e4300 without a 1:1 RAM option

The board I was thinking about getting - Gigabyte DSR2 G33 doesn't seem to have a 1:1 ram option according to the forum posts I've seen out there, though people are hopeful it'll come in a bios update. What I want to know is whether this is a problem and if there's a clever way around it without buying silly-speed ram? e.g. if I told the mobo to run it as 400MHz ddr2 should it scale with the cpu? All rather confusing...

If I got an e4300 (fsb=[quad pumped]200=800) and tried to overclock it I understand that the RAM frequency might go a bit nuts due to strange memory dividers making the ram run faster than you think it is going to? I have pc6400 rated OCZ @(5-5-5-12). Fingers crossed for more uATX motherboards to appear in the next month...

The Asus ones are in at the end of the month on zomp so the best thing will probably be to get one of them..Scan will almost certainly get them in soon..might be worth asking in scan.care

bit pricey..scan would probably be more like the £85 mark.

I can only guess that this will be a better overclocker

Not sure if it will help but, Ive got one of these with an overclocked e2160 running at 2.2ghz there is no memory divider so I had to guess the fsb to get the memory to run at its rated speed (667mhz) it can be done without a divider but just requires some patience.

Just remember on a u-atx board your not going to get over 300fsb mines running at 252x9 and the northbridge is very hot even with a hr-05 sitting on it.

well, the G33 has native support for the 1333 C2Ds so it will manage 333MHz ram minimum or it's RMA time?

I'm sure I found a few forums posts out there with overclocking with people into the 400+fsb range no problem. Main thing was people with the lower fsb cpus (i.e. e4300 @ 200fsb x4=800 rather than e6600 @ 266fsb x4=1066) had a limited OC ceiling because the ram gets hit with a fsb not-as-indicated in the bios or something. It all confused me a bit and added to the double-frequency and quad-pumped frequency stuff...

Hopefully the ASUS board will have a slightly better setup ... that or gigabyte update their bios to include a 1:1 RAM setting. Then again if I do end up going the ATX-route...aaargh, it's all to much
