new hdd not listed in win xp explorer

Hallo,
I have installed a new WD1200. I initiated and formatted it in WinXP (drive F. It is listed in the device list in the hardware manager. When I open Win Explorer, it is not listed. I can find it, when I go with f: in the adress field. Then, it is also listed in the main window of the explorer. Closing and re-opening the explorer makes it disappear again.
Any help from WinXP experts?

how about going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management (in classic view), click on the Disk Management tab on the left hand side, and see if its displayed there. May need reformatting. Also ensure that the device is enabled in the Hardware manager.

Hopefully this will sort it out, tho if it doesnt it will cut back on the possibilities of why this is happening

thanx, it's listed there, formatted with active partition. It is also enabled in the hardware manager. As said, I can copy files there and make program installations on the new drive. However, its not listed in explorer.

have you tried useing the lifeguard tools to install it?

I tried, but the win version did not start under win xp. I have not tried it with the dos version, but this is not recommended by Western Digital. Could I do that anyway, start the machine in DOS mode and try it? Any experience with this?

i've had to use lifeguard before to get a drive to be recognised,or maybe it was maxtor and maxblast,might be worth formatting the drive and try again,or even the dos version if agent's possible fix doesn't work....

unfortunately, although it lookes as being the solution, the Microsoft info did not help. Assigning a different drive letter to the new hdd did not solve the problem. Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that I have configured the boot drive with WinXP as slave and the new drive as master at the same line? Any idea? I will change the hardware configuration and try again.

had this recently on another computer (detected in computer management though not in explorer and win 2k though) not sure what I did to actually fix it, it just seemed to start working after I was playing around with it :/ try deleting and recreating the partitions and maybe not using quick format if you did? i'll have a think about it after coffee, may be able to remember then.

EDIT: oh, and i know for a fact this is a dodgy HD as another PC I have will not even post if the IDE cable was plugged in when using this HD...

I am somewhat embarassed to tell you. However, I sorted out the problem. It has nothing to do with the hardware. I have TweakUI installed, and there only drive C was checked to be shown. TweakUI does not automatically adapt to the installation of a new drive.
So, all fine now
