RAID Question

Im going to be raiding two 10k rpm drives striped on my new system, but I need to build it quikcer than planned to to the fast degredation of my old system. This means I cant save up all I need so I will have to build the basic spec first and stick eveything extra in afterwards... this means for a start I can only put in one 10k rpm hd....

If I install all the stuff on one hd then I put in the other at a later date, does this mean I will have to wipe the other drive and start again or can it just work out whats gone on and bring th enew drive up to speed?

you'll have to start from scratch.
You'll need to build a new "Array" across the drives from your RAID device, then format it, then install windows, then programs ect...

Ive run 2x 10k raptors in raid 0 for ages now with no problems, on most mobos its very easy to setup, just remember to have the driver floppy disc handy when installing windows

my first post :-)
one thing i warn about raid & striping is is the stripe fails you loose ALL the data on the array, found out the hard way!
with pci / agp locking its not as common but the risk is still there

RAID setups are nice with a real world difference to performance. Be aware that there is a risk tho, if anythings really important then back it up regularly. My home server has a mix of raid containers, one striped for perofrmance and one mirrored for the important bits I cant lose. I could not bear the thought of losing it all again, IBMs are data killers

Thats what a CD burner is for, all important stuff gets backed up regularly, it also helps me keep a library of the stuff I need want etc.

Agreed, was'nt a dig at you for RAID use, just a recommendation after multiple disc failures on my part in the past. Unfortunately I have too much data to make cd backups practical in a realistic sense, much easier to have a "live" copy.
