single core? or dual core ? dilema

i have a 3800+ single core 2 gb corsair ram a8n sli deluxe board 850xt pe , is there gonna be a big difffrence in getting a dual core 3800+
or just awaste of time and just save more monies and get intel c2d ?
the dual core chip is about £60 will there be big diffrence? or do i just ship or wait to get pushed??

As a stop-gap, the dual core s939 would probably be worth the cash, but I'd be tempted to wait and go for a lower-end C2D, and overclock hell out of it. It means new CPU, Mobo and RAM for you though, so it'll be an expensive-ish step. You'll really notice the difference though.

I was in same position at beginning of year. Had an opteron146. Was rempted by the chaep dual core options but went with c2d not regretted it at all. weegie.geek is right, you can upgrade for a reasonable amount, if you look around.

I'd say first think about what you do. If you spend time waiting on your computer to encode video or try to do things with heavy background tasks a dual core is a good idea. If not stick with a single core. For the upgrade I'd just go cheep. The low end dual cores are cheep, then again I'd just wait.

Depends on budget. The 4000 series are cheap and still very good. The 600 series are better, but cost more.

Keep in mind that that the rest of the system is probably more important. The difference between a 4000 series and 6000 series is probably less noticable in normal use than the difference between 1 gig or 2 gig of ram, or a cheap or decent graphics card.

as ddr2 £ are pretty low atm it would be a decent time to switch, i'd select a cpu based on your budget

I'm tempted to get a dual core Opteron over the summer to replace my AMD 3700. I'd then see how much overclocking I can get out of the Opteron and put the 3700 in the Linux box that I want to build.

Scan are the only place I've found selling Opterons for a decent price but I've yet to decide which one to get. There is a dual core Opteron for about £150 which seems good value compared to the next one up which is about £175-180. So about £25 more for about 200Mhz more.

Can't really afford a C2D setup at the moment though. I'd need a new chip (obviously), new mobo and new memory and I've other things I want to get this summer so I will have to wait until my next PC upgrade for C2D or whatever multiple cores Intel are selling then.

Understand your dilema but spending £150 on the opty is anbout 50% waht you'd need for a cheapish conroe swap. £ of 939 rig is falling all the rtime selling now would maximise return & chip in towards upgrade.

I'ts hard, been there, but it's worth the move.
