£1000 to spend

My mate has £1000 to spend on a computer and monitor. So far i told him to go for these bits:




But i really dont know whats best bang for buck. He wants it to be under £1000 really, what needs to be changed?

does it need to be a 22" monitor - that belinea isnt bad for desktop work - but for gaming, its not that great - and it only supports VGA input I believe.. I just ordered a screen for a mate - and instead of going for a 22" belinea i got a samsung 20" gaming monitor (can find the model if you want to know - was around £166 inc delivery i think.. Also 2Gb RAM? might want to look @ 4GB if your going to be using Vista..

Speaking of OS - I talke it you have your own copy, as there isnt one on the list?

Looks like the PSU should be ok - as your not running a load of hardware on it - so the GTX should be ok.

the only flaw with the psu is that its modular so the actual current fluctuates more then a standard psu. That psu would be enough for an sli 8800ultra's with a q6600 its more then enough for the build.

I said the same thing, but he said he was going to wait a while before venturing into overclocking.

One thing i was wondering, could he get away with a Corsair /HX 520 watt? instead of a 620?

Also, would the Tagan Dual Engine 650Watt be better? Because its £20 cheaper and i heard tagan are really good.

yes he could get the lower corsair model but it will make it more likely he will have to buy a new psu in a couple of years when he gets a pc as computers are getting more and more power hungry

tagan are ok not the greatest but fairly reliable if he wants to save the money and buy something else like the 4gb of ram instead of the 2gb he would probably benefit if using vista . If its xp then he would be better off spending the money on the psu

Well, it will also provide better cooling at stock (and produce less noise which is always good). The Arctic Freezer is only about £14 and to me you might as well install it from the beginning rather than leaving it and upgrading it later on.

yeah that will be fine spend the extra cash on some artic silver 5 and a tuniq tower lower temps increase the life of the cpu f not overclocking

Do you happen to have any references regarding modular PSUs suffering from fluctuating voltages saltnay? You're frankly the first and only person I've seen say anything of the kind.

that psu is great..read its reviews..talk to the people who use them..they're great.

Silent, efficent ..and I think i'm right in saying you can run SLi GTX's on the 620w..

I may well do, but from what kind of people? From a typical twit with an ill-founded opinion and a burning need to communicate it, or from someone who knows what he's doing and has taken the time to test a representative sample of regular and modular PSUs (as if anything like that'll ever happen)?

Honestly, if modular PSUs were prone to voltage fluctuations then PCs would be utterly useless. What about molex plugs? What about SATA plugs? PCI-E plugs? MB plugs? They're in no way inherently different from the modular plugs on the PSU. For that sake, what about the wall plug? How about my kettle, my stereo, my microwave..... Oh god, the sky is falling!!!!!!

I think P5K-E or P5K Deluxe would be better as they are newer chipsets. Also, the Seagates are known to be noisy, you should consider Samsungs or WDs (and why only 320GB?).
