error verifying burnt DVDs

Guys, I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction here...

I have a Pioneer DVR-110 burner with latest firmware. It's burnt probably over a thousand DVDs and CDs over the last year or two I've had it.

Recently, I've been burning some of my backup images from an ISO file back onto disc. Whilst the burn goes through fine, I then noticed some discs didn't boot in my regular dvd video player. So I burnt another copy using nero and did an image verification. Turns out there are some unreadable sectors at the end of the disc. Hmmm so there's my problem.

I put this down to cheap media I was using, and I thought that cheap media was particularly prone to bad burns at the edge (end) of the disc. However, I then burnt a shorter ISO image which was only 3 gig or so. Same problem, bad unreadable sectors at the end of the burn (which is now the middle of the disc).

As a last ditched attempt, I burnt some images using my GF's PC which has a Sony DVD writer in it. Did a verification at the end, no problems. Oooooh I though. Burnt a load more different images, and same thing, all ok

So I'm now wondering where the problem lies. Both our systems use the same version of XP, both are similar platforms (AMD nforce 4), both use the same version of nero 7.5.7.5.

The biggest difference points to the actual DVD burner, but what do you think? Can these "wear out" ? Of course, it's only 20 quid or so to get another burner, but just don't want to do that unless I'm pretty sure that's the cause of the problem. My old pio 110 is fine in every other aspect.

It probably is the burner. If you check the connections, clean the lens & it still does it, then bin it. They do indeed wear out over time & with a lot of useage.

What speeds this at ?

I've had the same issue on some datawrite discs using 16x but if I knock it down to 8x the data is fine.

Yip, if your using cheap media its a good ide to lower your writing speed down.

Well, the media is 8x certified and I'm burning it at 8x. When I had a fail though, I did try and burn the same image again at 4x and it still failed, so I doubt it's the burn speed

edit: the more I think, the more I hope and believe it's the burner. On the other PC / burner, I've burnt all discs at 8x and it's been fault-free.

Also, I'm intruiged why it only appears to happen with iso images. If I knock up my own file compilation in Nero and burn that, even if it's a pretty full disc, it always seems ok. I wonder if nero burns ISO images differently somehow

Is there a firmware update for the drives? Possibly it has some compatability problems with newer disks.

Other than that, you've tried all the other obvious solutions, so a new drive is in order. Good thing they are cheap.

If you swap the two drives over and the problem moves with the burner, then the Pioneer has given good service and retired with honour.... As you say thay are only 20 squids..... If the fault stays with the original PC.... it aint the Pioneer...

Errrr this program actually got took over so was took off the net, but i'm sure if you look hard enuff u will find it. (Newsgroups, Peer 2 Peer etc...)

But there is many progs out there to burn with, i was just sayin dont use nero for ISO's as its absolute pants

I was more after info which explains why Nero is pants for ISO burning. And before some says just use ImgBurn or whatever instead of Nero for ISO burning "because it's better", please explain why

Its hard to say why mate but Nero seems to struggle with ISO's weird i know, the only other problem with nero is the new version especially is very bloated, especially when compared with many other apps.

At the end of the day no one can tell you what to use, as its everyman to there own, I use software people slate but i find they do what i want, so everything is about how you feel with a program
