    So the spec only applies to the individual ports, not the controller itself ?

    yep, lots of fast drives are limited by the southbridge and its link to the NB, rather than its individual connections to the hard drives

    Areca RAID controller at PCI-E 8x speed. I believe each port has it's own bandwidth to the controller.

    Just to bring this thread back.

    Not bad considering its not an SSD. 4 x Seagate 500Gb.



    More important to the speed of the OS (which is on a 160gb Partition at the front (outside of the drive)

    I find that HDTune seems to stuck at a certain top speed and can't go higher.

    That is crazy speed. Though I personally can't find any use of fast access time. My main system is up 7x24 anyway. And 125GB at max speed you'll fill up the whole drive in 157 seconds
